Ciark Pollack honoured for
Clark Pollock, referee • extraor-
dinaire and a resident of Kincardine
has won the Western Ontario Ath-
letic Association's (WOAA) top
award, the Mike Weichel trophy.
The award is 'presented to someone
in western Ontario who has volun-
teered their time for the betterment
of,
Mr. Pollock received the award.
which was a complete surprise to
him, • September 19, at the WOAA
annual 'meeting in Wingham. He
though he was going with area
executive member, Jack 'Nolan, to
the WOAA to discuss refereeing."
Sharing the . honour ,with Mr.
Pollock is -Garnet Troyer of Mount
Forest, who Mr. Pollock says does
a lot of work for that town's minor
Pollock said the executive of
the WOAA . is made up of about
nine people,, who decided to give
the award to both men this year.
He said Mr. Troyer gets the
trophy for the first six months and
then he will have it at his home for
the next six months. Then it is
given back • to the-WOAA for the
next year's recipient. Mr. Pollock
was given a certificate which he
gets to keep.
With WOAA since 1968
Mr. Pollock began his hobby of
refereeing as a form of recreation
when he began officiating minor
and industrial hockey in Kincardine
before doing some WOAA anter. -
mediate. Mr. Pollock then joined

Jack Crozier and Lynn Shewfelt,
working :a two-man system in the
Ontario Hockey Association (OHA).
He put on the •red arm : bands
during the 1974-75 season when the
OHA implemented a three-man
system in the junior ranks,
From 1976 to 1979 he refereed
some major junior:,. hockey doing.
-around 12 games a year. Officiating
in Windsor and London was almost
a job.
Mr. Pollock's wife Helen' says he
was never home.
Since then, Mr. Pollock has
moved up the ladder in the OHA,
officiating junior, intermediate and
senior hockey,
One of the highlights of his career
was in 1982 when Mr. Pollock was
sent by the OHA to the National
Referees Certification Program's
Level Six clinic in British Colum-
bia. He received his Level Six later
that season, the highest honour a.
Canadian Amateur Hockey As-
sociation referee can attain.
In 1987 he refereed Canada's
Olympic team when they played the
Moscow Dynamos.
Although is forte is. refereeing,
Mr. Pollock also coached the Kin-
cardine Bantams in 1970 and then
again in 1983 to 1985.

Up until last year; Mr. Pollock
was the chief of the referees cori-
mince for the WOAA and was
instructor for 10 years for the On-
tario Minor Hockey Association's.

Now, Mr. Pollock can be spotted
refereeing . area games. If he's not
refereeing them, chances are you'll
see him watching games in Lis-
towel, Walkerton, Wingham Owen
Sound. lie takes an interest in local
players who have left Kincardine
minor hockey and are now playing
Junior games in nearby towns.
Mr. Pollock is still involved with
the WOAA but says he's in limbo.
With his expertise he will be siting
in on protest meetings.
