Local branch of Diabetes

The local Huron Bruce Canadian
Diabetes Branch will celebrate its
tenth anniversary Friday, October
12.
The first meeting to form a local
Canadian Diabetes Branch was held
on September 18,1980 in the clinic
'building at the Wingharn and
District hospital. Thesident
was Rev. Robert Perry and mem-
berships were $7.00 a family and
seniors $3.00.
The branch charter was presented'
to President Perry on May 21,
1981.
Mission Statement
We will' serve all affected by
diabetes. We will educate diabetics,
their families and health care
professionals. We will communicate
our purpose and the nature and
complications of diabetes to our
publics. We will provide support to
Canadian Research int he fields of
care and cure. -
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which
the pancreas, a large gland located
behind the stomach, doesn't release
enough insulininto the bloodstream
for the body's needs.
Insulin is a hormone that
regulates the way our body cells
use sugar. Without enough insulin,.
the blood sugar content rises and is
flushed out m the urine instead of
being converted into energy to keep
the body's machinery working. The
most common symptoms of
diabetes are: increased thirst, chan-
ges in appetite, loss of weight,
frequent urination, easy tiring,
itching, blurred vision. Anyone can
get diabetes at any age.
The means of controlling'
once fatal disease was discovered in
London, Ontario, by the research
team of Sir Frederick Ranting and
Dr. Charles Best. Before this dis-
covery, life expectancy could be
counted in months rather than in
years. Today, there is still no
known cure for diabetes but it can
be controlled by diet, exercise,
tablet or insulin.
Diabetics lead normal lives.
Teresa Courtney, the branch
president has been a diabetic on
insulin since 1954.
You are cordially invited to help
celebrate this 10th anniversary at
Lucknow Community Centre on
October 12. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m.,
followed by a variety program and
a dance. Tickets are available in
advance only, by calling Mrs.
Courtney at 529-7189.
