Ashfield oldtimer visits Luck -
now - Lucknow had as a visitor for
a few ours last week Mr. John A.
MacDonald, of Nanaimo, B.C., a
former resident of Kintail village.
Mr. MacDonald is best remem-
bered in this part as the man who
captained for a number of years the
Huron County Tug -of -War team in
the days when the Cakdanian
games made the name of Lucknow
known far and wide. To a friend we
heard MacDonald remark that it
was just 33 years ago this Septem-
ber that his team won its first vic-
tory over the men of Bruce. It was
on that memorable occasion when
Huron, having won 'the first pull,
the second proved a dead lock, and
for a whole hour and thirty Minutes
the teams tugged and struggled
neither being able to budge the
other an inch until at last someone
fearing that some of the men might
die in the struggle, cut the rope and
put an end to what was perhaps the
greatest physical contest of all time:
"There were giants in those days."
For eight successive years Bruce
had won from Huron, but his time
the decision went to MacDonald's
team. It had won the first pull and
during the deadlock the centre of
the rope stood about three feet to
the Huron side. -

packages sent to 'soldiers overseas,
the Post Office Department made a
thorough investigation, that reveals
that in no instance' was the alleged
loss or delay the fault, of the°
Department.
The investigation revealed that in
some cases it was misunderstanding
between the folks t home and the
boys overseas as to the number or
frequency of parcels sent. some
parcels failed to reach heir des -
filiation due to a boat being lost by
enemy action, and in another
instance epic* had failed to ship a
parcel that had been ordered.

Bob McKinley to Barry PC
banner in Huron - R.E. Bob
McKinley, 37, of Zurich, is the
Progressive Conservative candidate
for Huron Riding following an
active nomination meeting Tuesday
evening of last week which saw
seven nominees seeking to fill the
position left vacant ' by the
retirement of incumbent Elston
Cardiff. Mr. McKinley was ele fted
on the second ballot edging out two
other contenders George
McCutcheon,of Brussels and John
Durnin of West Wawanosh
Township.
John Loney again gets nod from
Bruce Conservatives - There was
little, in fact no doubt in the minds
of those who attentd the
nomination meeting of theBruce
Progressive Consbrvative as-
sociation_as to who their candidate
would be in the forthcoming federal `
.election. The murmerittgs, from the
first arrival at the Port Elgin High
,School .. auditorium were for John
Loney who had successfully earried
the Conservative' banner into the
1963 campaign when he succeeded
the late Andy Robinson who had
represented the riding for eighteen
years and whose sole defeat was at
the hands of Liberal Donald Blue or
Ripley.

Dogs kill pedigreed sheep . - A
pack of dogs running at large,
viciously attached the flocks of
Hampshire and Southdown sheep
on the farm of Wayne Todd late
Thursday evening. Fourteen animals
were killed outright and a further
seventeen were injured severely.
The dogs returned on Friday
morning and cornered one of the
Southdown sheep in the field. Jo-
Ann Todd happened to be at the
barn at the time and called after the
dos and managed to save the ewe.
The dogs were pursued by Hugh
and Wayne who followed many of
them home. These dogs have since
been destroyed.
