passed through the Museum, taken
part in our programs. and learned a<
bit about the history that swrouttds ..

The Museum's work with Bruce
County school teachers began in
1967 when the two groups got
together and moved the log school
house from .its. original site on Lot
10 Concessions 9 in Amabel
Township to the front of the.
Museum where it sits today. The
log school house was constructed in
1875 from wood .felled to clear the
lot. The desks, benches and shelves
were made by the local people for
.. the school house. Schon sl , such as
`this, were a Community respo n,
,sibili with each fairlyinthearea
contriibuting their precious time and
money. to the :construction, es-
tablishment and maintenance of the
schoolk .School ;teachers often
boarded out with different families
in the community as part of the
family's contribution to the uplteep
of the school. All ages attended the
school. It was even noted that.when
the season permitted, some parents
attended to improve or taut : basic
reading and ` writing skills. The
Amabel log school house was in
use until 1892, when a new school
was constructed.. After 1892,. the
building was used*as a dwelling; a
chicken shed and a 'slaughter house..
It remained empty until Mrs. T.
