leadership. Obviously the election
call hasn't worked out for us --but
then, a lot of things didn't work out
for us."
However, Peterson took respon-
sibility for the defeat himself, resig-
ning his position as party leader in
apost-election address. •
"He'S worked hard, I think he
deserved better," said Elston.
Despite his continued popularity
in Bruce, Eiston's domination of
the polis was si:nificanlly reduced
from the, 12. i i i vote margin he
enjoyed in 1987.
Elston polled 11,419 votes, 3,521
more than his neatest rival, the
NDP's Len Hope who received
7,898 votes. Terry Halpin, Conser-
vative candidate received 7;339
votes to finish third. Linda
Freiburger of the Family Coalition
Party came fourth, with 3,592
votes.
The FCP's 3,592 votes was an
increase of more than 1,500 on the
2007 votes the party's Adrian Keet
polled in 1987. Elston said he was
impressed with Freiburgcr.'s cam-
paign.
"She worked hard. In fact, when
I was _out running around, I saw her
out much more than I saw Mr.
Hatpin or Mr. Hope," Elston said,
"That's not to say they weren't out
thele working too,," he added quick-
ly.
Elston said mainstreeting and
door-to=doorcampaigning ate effcc-
five in the Bruce riding and credits
his support partly to extensive use
of such campaign practices.

c
"This is the type of tiding where
if you .get out and talk to people.
and meet the people, and .I like
people, it works."
Elston arcus ed the NDP of
scaremongering tactics during the
campaign.
"They had some local activity at
the (Canadian Auto Workers) plant
(in Port Elgin), where they told
people if they voted for Elston, they
would lose their pensions."
Halpin had made ' opposition to
county restructuring the key to his
platform, stating that Elston and the
Liberals would impose it on Bruce
if elected.
"They were suggesting the
government might bring in a piece
of legislation to that effect. I was
(as a cabinet minister) in a position
to block that."
Asked how the Liberal party
would rebuild after • the crushing
defeat, Elston was cautious.
"This is a time to sit back and
look at things, and let cooler heads
prevail."
After moving across the street to
the Paisley Curling Club, where
Elston supporters gathered for a
victory party, Elston lamented the
loss of "a good many of my col-
leagues,".
ol-
leagues,. who failed to retain their
seats.
One of only nine of 18 Liberal
cabinet ministers to be re-elected,
Elston encouraged the party faithful
to remain loyal.
"We'll be back and in the mean-
time, we'll be malting sure this
province gets good government and.
in fact sensible government. We'll
survive and we'll grow strong alit
