PAISLEY—Murray Elston, incum-
bent Bruce MPP, survived last
Thursday night's New Democratic
Party landslide t9 become one of
•only nine Liberal cabinet ministers
to be re-elected.
The Liberals were swept from
poWer in the September 6 election„
after governing for five years, as
the NDP won 74 seats it• was
enough to form the first NDP
majority government in Ontario's
history. The Liberals managed to
who only 36 seats, compared to the
94 they won in 1987. The Progres-
sive Conservative parry •placed
third, winning 20 seats.
"The people. have spoken, and,
from my point of vie*, the people
are always right," said an obviously
disappointed Elston after. election
night broadcasts announced a
projected ' NDP majority victory
around 8:35 p.m.
A subdued Elston spent the elec-
tion night at his campaign head-
quarters in Paisley, watching
televised election coverage and
tirelessly answering ceaseless ques-
tions from reporters.
Elston expressed =prise at the
scale of the NM victory and
cautioned Ontario, residents to ex-
pect tax hikes and economic
uneasiness as a result,
"Thett's a double whammy that
we're going to get hit with because
of their policies."
Elston said the NDP's promise to
increase the minimum wage to
$7.20 per hour "not only affects a
businesspayroll, but its Employer
Health Tax and Workmen's Com-
pensation payments." -
Elston said• the NDP rould have

platform so they could bock 'away
from some those commitments."
The new government's inex-
perience with legislative power
could hamper their early efforts to
govern, Elston speculated. However,
he said he expected the NDP mem-
bers to give their best effort.
"We (the Libeiais) were novices
too once. These are all dedicated
men and women and I have a great -
deal of admiration for anyone who
runs for office became it does take
a great deal of commitment," said
Elston, who was first elected to the
legislature in 1981.
Elston rose to prominence after
the Liberals came to power. He\
becameminister of health after the
party wona minority government in
1985 and held that, position until
1987. He was appomted chairman
of the cabinet board of management
on September 28, 1987, after the
party won a huge majority in the
1987 election. On August 16, 1988,
he becanie minister of financial
institutions.
The party's fall from power
means a loss of cabinet positions
for Elston and a switch in his role
fibm government to Opposition. He
expects .the Liberals to make a`
smooth transition to the role, due to
past experience.
"It's going, to be a lot easier for
us because of our experience.
