The Wiiaghwai and Area Seniors
Day Centre has experienced manY
changes over the years. Along with
anew name. (the centre was known
as .,the,,,.,.y!lay pOei re for. the:
L omeboww.), the most *wade
change to date is the deveki i1Itent
of a new facility to louse the Day
Centre Piogcam.
The Day Centre has had the op=
portuuity to rent the Armouries in
exchange for a grant. Having use of
the armouries over the year
compliments of the Town. of Win-
gham, has been greatly te
. iated.
The Day Centre Program has gown
to such an extent that it was time to
look for alternate .quarters.
Dr. Maarten Bokhout, Huron
County meds 1, officer of health.
and Linda Uirrani, a MCSS
program Supervisor came up with
the idea the Day Centre could share
a facility with the Health Unit. This
evolved into development of •a
separate facility for the Day Centre.
Steve McDougall, Construction Ltd.,
owner of *Ireland and contractor for
the new building was very en-
thusiastic about the project.
The Ministry of Community and
Social Services made this possible
by granting $55,000 to the centre to
assist in construction, „ with the
understanding that a reduced fee for
rent would be charged ,over a long-
tenn.period.
Increased operational funding
through the Waterloo office and the
London office of MCSS made it
possible to include rent 'in the
bud$eted expenses.
Once the new facility is open, the
Day Centre will host a new
program; a Day Away'progatn fur
those with Alzheimers or related
disorders. The building will have
special features that make life easier
for adults with special needs. Dr.
s Centre

Heavy rains drown out beans
Heavy rains this summer have
'"drowned out" and "waterlogged"
low areas of most bean fields this
yeai. This excess moisture has also
shortened the life., of applied her-
bicides. Pigweed, " lamb's -quarters.
and ragweed escapes are evident in
these fields.
Excessively weedy fields are •
more difficult to harvest and may
lead to quality problems. Green
material (weeds and/or green beans)
can stain dry beans when harvested.
Any harvest • delay increases the
potential for weather damage as
well.
Beans grown in traditional wide
rows (28"-30") can be pulled and
allowed to dry in the windrow
before combining. With narrow row
or solid seed beans, weedy and
green patches can be left and har-
vested separately.
A killing .frost or application of
desiccant . is the only way to dry.
down weeds: and uneven maturing
beans. A desiccant should be' con-
sidered when there is excessive
weed growth, uneven ripening or
regrowth' in a field. Last year
regrowth was a major problem,
Presently Region is the only
recommended desiccant .on field
beans. The recommended rate is 0.8
L/acre to 1.1 L/acre. The low rate
maybe used with moderate to light
weed pressure and where uneven
ripening is a concem. If weed infes-
tation is heavy or regrowth is a
problem, the higher rate should be
used. This treatment does not
mature green beans or lower the
moisture of beans.
