ONTARIO JUNIOR CITIZEN O1 THE YEAR AWARDS a joint community project of Cana ion Canadian Airlines International Solicitor General Steven Offer announced .recently a grant of $10;000 to the Ontario Block Parents Program. , • - This latest grant is an increase r of .82,000 from the 1588figure and will be used to cover the pro- gram's operational co4ta.for 1989. The Minlstry_,: has provided annual funding to ; -the Ontario Block Parent Program since 1977. The Block Parent Program establishes "safe" homes. in neighbourhoods for children who need immediate assistance. Solicitor General Offer describes the program as "one of the earliest examples ofa counmulni- ty based initiative to- promote legal security ' The Block Parent Program illustrates law a com- munity can work together. to enhance pollee protection and te take preventative measures to atop 'crime before it happens." The local chapter of the Block Parent Program came into beiiiig in December 1978, as a project of the :Lucknow District.n{inettes. In later years it was turned over to a Block. Parent Committee, with the ;current chairperson being Marguerite' Sanderson, and ' treasurer Barb Helm. • The first road signs at the four entrances- tothe village were erected m May 1983. This year, with a donation of 1300 from Legion Branch 309, the r signs were replaced with new ones. The Block Parent Committee is always looking for new par- ticipants. Currently 35 homes lay the Block Parent Sign in windows. The program runs all year long. Parti is place the sign in er wow when they are at home or available to lend assistance should the need arise. When away from the home, or wishing not to be disturbed, the sign is removed. If you are interested in becom- ing a Block Parent please call Marguerite Sanderson or Barb (Evans) Henn. • Investigation at standstill in Mildmay narcotic theft Crime Stoppers of Grey -Bruce -- are seeking the public's assistance in the investigation of a break, enteer andy. theft which occurred in Mild- The Walkerton Detachment :01 the Ontario Provincial Police report they have exhausted all available lead in the investigation.of a , enter and theft which occur- red at Stewart's Pharmacy , in Mildmay. Police report that sometime dur- ing the night of March 14 of this year, unknown person(s) entered Stewart's Pharmacy by breaking the lock on the front door. Once in, side, the culprits went directly to the pharmacy area and searched for -and found, a quantity of nar- cotics..'1 The thieves then left the AIME STOPPERS 1.800-265-3787 scene. Police believe this to be the work of 'experiences thieves, as a number of . similar thefts were reported throughout central and southwestern Ontario duringthe same time period.
