ore Sober Drivers Program,
egins in Huron July 1
For years, police' departments
and others have advised' people not
to drink and drive. Recent 'statistics
indicate that the majority of
drivers are responsible citizens who
do not drink and . drive, , but unfor
tunat4*, -TAW motorists in the
Huron County area are still being.:
charged with impaired driving
while others continue toreceive a
warning about driving after
drinking. - The xSober DriversProgram
isan r ai, positiveapproach
to reinforce sober driving. It will:,
1) Provides drivers at -police
roadside spotcliecks'with a: licence
holder imprinted with "Th'anksfor
being a SobernDriver to 'compli-
ment their law-abiding behaviour.
2) Provide pamphlets which .en-
courage . sober drivingfor those
drivers warned for ` drinking and
who have received' a twelve-hour
suspension. -
3) Promote, through a positive
community -wide media campaign,
the pub'lic's awareness of police
spotchecks and the, value of sober
driving.
The combination of these three
elements the spotchecks, the
• educational material, . and the.
media campaign - together provide
a powerful reinforcer for sober
driving.
The media campaign is aimed at
the entire community. It is primari-
ly intended to'ithank those who are
sober drivers but also: to let,
everyone know the police' are run-
ning spotchecks.
The folders are aimed at all
drivers who are stopped at 'these
spotchecks who have not been
drinkiing. T►iese are the people the
More Sober Drivers Program want
to reward': •
• Research has shown that the best
way to influence ,behavior is to
blend po'licy with education. The
More' Sober Drivers Program has
both these components.
Random spotchecks is the' policy
strategy with the public and the
Media. campaign' provides a com-
plementary educational message
which informs the community
about the .program and the sober
driving message. The folders which
serve. as a reward to reinforce
positive behavior links the policy
and. educational components
together. •
The mixing of all id these three
elements, the spotchecks, the media
campaign and, the folder together
provide , a powerful reinforcer for
sober delving, •
The More ber Drivers Program
is a good way to get the conununi-
ty involved and. behind the spit-
check
potcheck 'program:
It has been found that the best
approach is working with a team of
people. Representation from the
Police Departments, The Huron Ad=
diction Assessment • and • Referral
.Centre, the Addiction Research
Foundation,. CKNX'Radio, the local
county newspapers and the Com-
munity are, only' a few of the•key
people involved. Commitment is
essential.
The More Sober Drivers Program
is being planned and coordinated
by the Huron Addiction Assessment
and Referral Centre. Endorsed by
the ' Drinking and . Driving
Countermeasures '90 Committee
and supported by CKNX•Radio, the
principle implementation will be
carried out by officers of the
OPP District s 0, and the Municipal
Police Forces of Goderich,
Wingham, Clinton, Seaforth, . and
Exeter. The program is to begin
July 1st weekend. • 4,,
