"We're not going to get a better price right away,, so- we've got to make the best of what we've got." "It's staggering the number of people who are involved producing sheep, but there are very few who use it as their only source of income," says O'Neill. Making sheep farming a more pro- fitable enterprise was the purpose of a sheep farming information day in St. Helens Saturday." "I got guest speakers that I thought could get some .information, out " that • would improve the . bottom .line," said Mike O'Neill, who organized the event on Hugh Todd'sfarm just outside St. Helens. The first speaker of the morning discussed ai tificial insemination: which is new to the sheep industry, another who would talk about the technology of milk replacers, and a third with information on feed rations. » For lunch there was a lainb barbecue, and in the afternoon there was a fourth guest speaker who talked about how elec- tric fences can be used more effectively to keep predators out and sheep in, a 'fifth with advice on how sheep farmers Co-op----educatio-n My name is Harold Martin and I' am currently in grade twelve at F,E. Madill Secondary School. I am involved in the co-operative education program which allows a student to - gain practical knowledge concerning a career they are interested in. My placement is with the Ambulance Department at the Wingham and. District Hospital. ` I work every other afternoon Monday through Friday while tatting classes in the morning. I. must accumulate 220 hours of volunteer work at my Job placement. At work I get, first, hand knowledge about the job of an Ambulance Attendant. While out on calls I• help carry stretchers and fill out transfer forms. I am training to use the equipment in the ambulances, Some examples of this are splints, trac- most beneficial tion splints, extruation devices, cervical collars, and oxygen apparatus. I am lear- ning to take' blood pressures and pulses. I am also trained using videos and books, and am currently enrolled in a St.• John's Ambulance first aid course. All training is done under the supervision of an Emergency Medical Attendant. I would like to personally thank all the people • who work in the Ambulance Department for their patience and kind- ness in teaching me so far in this pro- gram, I am looking forward to the re- mainder of the year and I hope I will learn as much as I have in the previous months. Through this experience I have discovered that this is the career I wish to pursue. I believe that the co-operative education program is the most beneficial course offered. - a • 0714 0
