AM ILINOS

Living with a pack rat
As you sit in your cogafortable chair
reading flies week'a offering, I Will be
half way through five days of what is
often tanned as "R and . No I am not
out of the :province, or the country; heck
I'm not even out of Ashiieid toms*. No
I have taken this, week to simply put the
grey matter into Confidentially,
this week will also be used to go through
' cupboards, daaets and tie basement in
an effort to reduce the ung of "junk"
mypack rat has managed to store over
the last 20 years. -
While .the term pack rat is familiar to
me, I really never knew where the name
was derived from until I looked it up in
the dictionary. Pack rat is damned ' as '
"any .of a genus of North American rags.
that Often carry off and hide small ay -
tides in, their nests." That aptly
describes my Pea rat, with the exon
of the wording "small: articles". My two-
• legged pack rat doesn't contain himself to
small articles. •
If you live, with a pack rat, you win
understand why. I have to take on Otis
• momumentous chore" when he is not
around. Pack rats keep everrything! They
are always sure that in the future they.
will have some use for -all of these ar-
tides I call "junk".
A few years ago X attempted to throw
out unwed articles. I carefully packed all
of it in garbage begs, put tinem out in the
barrels and waited for dump day. My
rat questioned, me when he was
the truck as to why there was aao
antes garbage. I skirted the issue sruard elf
he oat to the dump. 4n 1# return a while
later, I couldn't believe my eyes,es I
watched him unload a . good portion of
what he head Set off with,
lily1 ` rat' once had a pair of pants
he y liked. He wore them and wore
than, until finally the seat was so thin
that I decided they
should Wilton), that
He aI had
c+orivid m when I told hien I what I bad
planned. I waited for a couple of months
and then• took the pants,. wrapped
Wambold garbage in them and pat them
at the bottom of a full bagof garbage. I'
was sure he . wouldn't ' go through
household waste checking . for them.
You can understand why living with a
pack rat makes you devious. Now if you
are wondering why I am writing about
this in advance, no need to worry, my
pack rat never hastime to read the
paper until the weekend. By that time 1
will have been . a rugh the house'. from
top to ;, up what is good us-
ed
stuff for the Lions auction sale and
the rest will be safely at . rest in the
dump.

DEATH OF DR. D. M. GORDON One
of the best known and most highly
esteemed residents of Lucknow and
vicinity passed away on Thursday of last
week in the person of Dr. D. M. Gordon.
The doctor - suffered` a serious
breakdown of health about three years
ago, but it was thought at the time that
with a few month's rest he would regain
strength. An attack of grippe a few
months ago shattered these hopes and
through the heart thus weakened the end
came, rather suddenly though not
altogether unexpectedly.
It may be said that Dr. Gordon died
before his time, and those who knew will
say this his untimely breakdown was due
to work in the interests of . his patients
and profession. To all those who looked
to him for assistance he was most atten-
tive, and it is said that regardless of
weather and over work, he never was
known to utter a word of complaint when
called to the sick bed.

There is an age when young children
know no better, and then comes the age
when boys, m particular, consider it's
smart to swear. We, admit we recall this
latter . stage personally. But it's not
smart, neither .is it gentlemanly or plea-
sant to hear. So, boys and girls, don't let
anyone accuse you of being "an awful
kid to swear.
