Junior • Kindergarten programs were established in Toronto in 1945. First of all Iwant to say to you as parents of young children that the deeision to Send your child off to scfhool is not an easy decision to make. One argument against Junior Kindergarten with which I have difficulty is that they didn't have it when I went to school so why do we need it now. I immediately thinkof my grandmother who' didn't have cars or television when she went to school either and threes. do change: As a matter of fact there is research which says by the end of grade two or three a child who is doing well in school is likely to continue doing well. And for a child who is experiencing difficulty in the school setting it isgoing to be very difficult — first of all to change that child's mindset about how he or she feels about himself or herself in the school situation, and secondly tomake a big change in the child's Mind towards school and what school is all about. Personally, I never heard a parent who sent their child to junior Kindergarten who regretted the decision. This teacher understands that young children are very individual, are very curious, active and eager to learn. That's the kind of child who comes into the system. Secondly, the Junior Kindergarten Lucknow Band by Amy Austin This year the Lucknow Band has been very busy. In September we participated in the Lucknow Fall Fair. In November we took part in the Re.membrance Day service. December was one of our busiest znonths. We went to Seaforth on a very chilly night, and paraded down the street. Also in December we performed in our own home town at theannual Santa Claus Parade. This year we stood in the funeral home garage and .performed. Shortly after the Santa Claus parade, the band held its Christmas youth night, at the Community Centre, which was enjoyed by all. This year our band tour, to Michigan U.S.A. is being held May 9, 10 and llth. One of the place we will be visiting is Sandusky, we will be performing for a very large audience which will include their lower (K-5), Middle school (6.8) and their upper school (HO School). Everyone is looking forward to the Band Tour. So remember band members kee saving up that American Money!!! Iiiir4v; that teeter is very aware Of Pre - reading, pre -math, pre -environmental studies. Anothervery important area is to provide the opportunity for the child to become eomfortable with and lean to trust an adult outside the family situation. For some children it is their first time to be involved with another adult for any length of time. A baby sitting service? Not if the things that I have just mentioned are going on. Surely we can put that aside. It's not day care either because day care must provide for the child from 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 at night. A Junior Kindergarten program which operates for three boors a day is not day care nor do .we suggest the it is going solve the day care question; Al day Kindergartens do not take the place if Day Care because nothing in the educational system as yet is involved with children from, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Junior Kindergarten certainly doesn't mean that a child will be reading six months earlier. Let me assure you of that. Junior - Kindergarten Senior Kindergarten to me means that instead of one year of having an opportunity to do all these activities, you now have two. Different children progress at different rates and for some children that extra time just seems to make that child much more self-confident, gives a feeling of self worth and the self motivitation to go in to the programs that are ahead. • keeps busy course you probably blow the annual Band Concert is being held May 4, at the Community Centre. We have been practicing up for this big event This year we have numy new songs to delight you.
