Retiring Lucknow firemen honoured
Firefighters, past and present; Reeves
Cecil Cranston, Barry Johnston, Allan
Gibson and Ab Murray; spouses; friends
and relatives were among the approx=
imately 120 attending the Appreciation
Night, held last Saturday, April 28, in
honour of four men, retiring from the
Lucknow and District Fire Department.
Their total years of service to the
residents of this community numbers 97.
Bud Hamilton, who retired as chief ear-
ly this year, had been with the depart-
ment 40 years; Ross Irwin 28 years, ••
Donald .McMurray 17 years .and Robert
Struthers 12 years. ,
Following dinner, each man was
presented with a plaque -from the
Lucknow and District Fire Department in
appreciation of their service. Retired
Chief Bud Hamilton was also presented
with his fire helmet, a gold helmet, a gilt
from the area Fire Board and a •plaque
from the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office
representative, Ken Jones.
Deputy Chief. Gary Austin received The
Harvey Gunnis Award for dedication and
service to the fiire department.

Break and enter
at Legion
Constable Randy Burch, of the Kin-
cardine Detachment of. the Ontario Pro-
vincial Police, is investigating a break
and entry early April 28, at the Royal
Canadian Legion, Lucknow. Approx-
imately $150 worth of liquor and
cigarettes were • stolen. Forced entry
was gained through a window.
In the early evening of Sunday, April
29, two Ripley youngsters were playing
in their backyard when a medium siz-
ed dog entered the yard and started
chasing them. A seven year old girl
was bitten on the hand and treated at
the Kincardine Hospital. The animal has
been destroyed and will be examined by
Agriculture Canada for rabies. During
the hunt for the dog, information was
received that it had been roaming
around the Ripley area for the past
week and may have bitten two other
children. If anyone has any information

at Lucknow Central Public School will
participate in the Midwestern Ontario
Rotary Music Festival held in Walker-
ton tomorrow (May 3), They will Pre-
sent "Hand Me Down My Silver
Truinpet", at the Knox Presbyterian
Church at 10:35 am.

,(Oeui) Gardner, who was recently
elected as president of The. Waterloo
County,' ' Shrine Club for 1990. Many
Lucknow and area residents will
remember Ken, the son of Anne Ander-
son. Ken attended Zion Public School,
Lucknow High School and F. E. Madill
Secondary School,
Ken and his wife, the former Wendy
Emberlin, and their two daughters, Lisa
and Angela, live in Kitchener. Ken is
project manager for Sutherland and
Schutte,
Thielkes _cjestjned
for the Phillipine
In early June the parishioners of
'Latham and District 'Christian Reform-
ed Church will say goodbye' to their pre-
sent minister, Dwayne Thielke and his
family, Dwayne, Gladys °and their two
children, Frederick 3, and Timothy 1
will spend four weeks on vacation.
The first of July they will start orien-
tation and a variety of other activities
to prepare them for their `first three
year term as missionaries. to. the people,
of the Phillipines, through Christian
Reformed World Missions.
Orientation will include such things
acquiring support, learning the culture,
counselling on starting a new life and.
relating to people, and studying how to
learn a new language. %bile the official
language of the Phillipines is. English,
the trade language is Tagalog. To this
end time will, be spent at the Toronto
School of Linguistics as well as one in
Michigan.
Dwayne and Gladys came to.Luclmow
fn August 1905, and Gladys.. Said that
saying goodbye to the people of their
church and Luclmow will be tearful, but
they are very excited with their long in-
terest in being missionaries becoming a
reality.

of Lucimow .Central Public School have
worked diligently on produeing a school
newspaper.
