Several people have asked if they con

The raison for this has Waling to do
with the ability of the drill or planter to
plant tinough the crop residoe, or with
tertiliee, Or with todnii from the crop
residues. . The only reason this system
won't work la that the forage crop will
begone a weed in the next crop and' we
have no effective way of controlling this
weed in the spring..
Perennial forage legumes or grasses
have a large root mass once they are
established, and a strong ability to
regrow when the top growth is removed;
this is what makes them valuable as
forages. it also means that to kill these
plants chemically, we must get enough
herbicide into the root and this requires
waiting until there is 46" of top growth
to absorb and translocate the herbicide.
If the crop is sprayed too soon, the top
growth will be burnt off, but it will
regrow from the root. With our growing
season in Bruce County, we cannot wait
long enough to allow sufficient top growth
and still obtain good crop yields.
If these forages are not controlled, they
pose several problems for the emerging
crop. First, they will compete directly for
light, water and nutrients. They will also
provide shelter for slugs and rodents,
which will feed on the emerging crop.
Finally, they will remain green after the
crop is mature, causing headaches at
harvest.
A successful no -till system requires that
a forage crop or red clover plowdown be
killed the fall before pbanthig. If you
haven't done this and want to try some
form of conservation tillage, you are pro-
bably better to use a disc or chisel plow
this spring to kill the forage

soybeans, s,cb are planted later in the
spring. Forage graces or twitch grant
am be controlled with glyphosate, but
this will not give good control of the
forage legumes. A honnonotype her-
hielde him A, 4-D or 1110810111 will give
good control of these but be sure to app-
ly them soon est before Planting to
avoid wobima wi residues.

'WOLF ROPNTY
The. Bruce County Federation of
.Agritulture (BCFA) and the South Bruce
Cow Calf Club have asked Bruce County"
council to install control measures for
wolves, coyotes and wild dogs.
At its Axil 17 meeting, coluteil for-
warded the matter to its Agriculture,
Tourism and Planning Conunittee,
Both groups have heard reports OI
packs of these animals as largess 10 to
12 in the Arran Lake and Simon River
area.
The BCFA said it feels 'lids is the
direct result of lack of hunting dee to
pelt prices cid the remettal of the boun-
ty." • -
The two groups said they fear farmers
and others may suffer unless control
measures, similar to that for nuisance
beavers.
Wolves are being blamed for cattle kill-
ed on a Cargill -area farm recently and
Brant Township has been informed of
several other "bush wait" sightings
recent weeks.
