Kerrie receives Excellence Award

CHESLEY A young areagirl, with a
rare aging dl.eese, has one more award
to add to her cam.
Kerrie &steer, a Grade 2 student at
Kincardine Township -Tiverton. Public
School, was preeiented with the Bruce
of County
Boardtion
E w� attended the
board's Tueeiday, April 17 meeting with
her family and teaching assistant to ac-
cept the award.
"I'll probably hang it upon my wall,"
said Kerrie, u1 an interview after the
° presentation.
She already has two' other award's, in-
cluding the prestigious 3untor Citizen of
the Year Award. She was one of 12 reci-
plents in Ontario to receive theaward in
1980, Kerrie has progeria, a very rare
condition in whichcertain aspects of the
aging process . are. greatly accelerated.
The disease leaves its victims very tiny
and often with heart problems.
She is the only person in Canada with
the disease and ones of 15 with in the .
world. ,
She received the Junior Citizen award
for "her Attitude towards life, school and
the people around her" and for the
" doltrage, determination,and keen sense
of humour" with which she handles her
disability,
The Recognition of Excellence award
was :to honor Kerrie within, the board of
education for her Junior Citizen award.
With her educational assistant, Judy
Taylor, Kerrie is able tofollow the
regular school program and participate in
most activities. Her Grade 2 teacher has
noted that studentsin the class treat
each other in a more .gentle way because
of. Kerrie's presence in the room,
Bob and June Slesser, Kerrie's parents,
said the : beard's award makes . them
"very proud" ' of their daughter.

Ashfiekl township approves

Members of Ashfield Council met on
April :3 at which meeting Luc Gagnon
from Pannell, Kerr, MacGillivrary was in
attendance andpresented the 1989 finan-
cial statement' for the:•township.
Tile drain loan applications for Greg
Feagan for $14,200 and Paul, Adams for
$18,500 were approved. •
The following fees were set for access
to the township waste site after rregular.

At special meeting on April 10, coun-
cil met to discuss the Amber Sands Sub-
division. Councillors Andrew, Simpson,
Cairncross and Reeve Gibson *ere pre-
sent. Dan Murphy, solicitor for the
Township of Ashfield and Roger Hunt
repr�esenting the current owners of the
subdivision were also present,
Mr. Murphy 'reviewed with council the
terms of the old development agreement.
He also recommended in consultation
with Dennis Potter, engineer for B.M.
Ross and Associates that a new develop-
ment agreement would have to provide
for lot levies,; paved roads and a letter of
credit to replace the security lots ht the
original development agreement.
Mr. Hunt commented that the subdivi-
sion is currently for sale and that he
wished to have some information to ppre.-
sent
e .-sent to prospective purchasers regarding
proposed requirements under a new
development agreement.
Discussion followed on clarifying mat-
ters
atters between all parties ensuring that
those involved were aware of areas of
the agreement that have or have not
been finalized.
At the April 17 meeting of Ashfield
Council, Allan Brown was in attendance
to request council to consider closing by
by-law, the unopened portion of Well-
ington Street adjacent to his. property, to
allow lens additional lot area to construct
a residence. The road superintendent was
directed to obtain advice from the
township solicitor regarding this request.
A final loan application for funds under
the Ontario Home Renewal Program for
Brigitte Wolf was approved.
The tender .of Jennison Construction
was accepted for the hauling and
spreading of "B" graverat a price of .59
for the first kilometer and .1075 per
kilometer thereafter.
Next meeting of council is on May 1, at
7:30 p.m.
MVCA appoints
General Manager
' The. Executive Committee', of the
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
(MVCA) has appointed Ken R. (Chuck)
Weatman as General Manager of the
Authority, effective April 9th. Ken
replaces Les Tervit, who resigned in
January. •
Mr. Westtnan is a graduate of. the
University of Guelph with a degree in
Agri. He has worked for conserva-
tion authorities since 1971, begbicing as a
Resource Manager for the Kettle and
Catfish Authorities. In 1976 he moved to
the Saugeen Valley Authority as Resource
Manager. He held the position of General..
Manager•of the Saugeen Valley Authori-
ty from 1900 through 89.
While working for the Saugeen Valley,
Mr, Weatman was active on a number of
staff conunittees of the Association of
Conservation Authorities of Ontario
(ACAO).
