Your decision depends .on what you want to use the computer for and how le' you want to keep it. One aled needs to keep in mind the software or programs that are needed. to run the 'cariputer. Moat programs are written for IBM 'typeef computers. The Main components or "hardware" of a computer are as follows: CPU (Cen- tral Processing Unit), n keyboard,..a monitor, a disk drive one or two, and a printer. The CPU or brains of the coinpitter is responsible for running the programs. It. is available in four power ranges,, 8088 known as PC or XT technology; 00286 knows as AT or 206 technology; 80386 known as. 386 technology; 80486 knows as 486 technology. -m The XT was first introduced: to the. market in 1981. This machine is limited to 640 kilobytes of memory. This is a good starter computer and will run most of the "software" on the market. The AT was introduced in 1964 and can. handle up to 16 megabytes of memory. It has the capability of running the pro- grams ro- that theat a farmaer w fn programs years will require this size of a CPU. The "386" and "486" models , are new to the market and are more powerful and faster. Most farmers do not need these capabilities or the extra cost for purchas- ing these units. Your computer will need disk drives to run the "software" or programs and store data. They come in two sizes, the traditional 5 1/4" disk and the 3 1/2° disk. The 3 1/2" disks are sturdier and have twice the memory capacity for stor- ing programs. Most farm computers will. need "hard disks" which are permanent- ly ermanently installed. A hard disk is much faster and has 10 to 40 times the storage capacity as compared to a single diskette. Your computer will need * monitor. For . moo farmwee the least catty Monitor is a high resolution monochrome screen. If you want to .use the computer. for games, you mey want a RGA or VOA colour monitor. An enhanced keyboard' is becoming standard on most computers. This keyboard hu cursor goitre' key* which` ens les one to use the numeric pad much easier. • • The 'last 'g that completes the package is a rater. There are many models availai e.
