Brown. The Browns had owned the
business, known then aa the Luckow{ruit Market, since 1954,
Dorothy hales. from Chesiey and Jima
was from Wingham. In 1976, Jim was
working' as the manager of the, purchase
department at Stanley Doors in Wingbam
and Dorothy, a registered nurse, was
employed at a doctor's dice. When it
became evident to Jim that a transfer to
Toronto was imminent, a decision had to.
be made - move or get into another line
of business. Neither of them "were, too
crazy" about moving to Toronto and
following the "family vote" . by
themselvesand their two children, Susan
and Jim, the 'decision was made to par.
chase the grocery store in Lucknow. By
the way the vote was 4 - 0 in: favour of
moving to Lucknow.

themselves for the first three months, at
which time they realized' spending night
and day in the store had to change. It
was at this time they ` hired Marion
Campbell; who worked/ with the Rains un-
til her retirement in 1983.
Over ''the - years thestore has been
modernized, replacing equipment and,.
shelving. Some of the present shelving.
came from Lanesville store, which dos-
ed a few years ago. The small family
grocery store in the country has become
a thing of the past, as. Is evidenced by
the closing of both Lanesville and St.
Helen's General Stores.

shopping at Bain's.
Another added feature of Baln.'s is their
"phone your order in, well deliver." Jim
said during the interview, that they have
cuStomers who have never been inside in
their store. Delivery to the home doesn't
necessarily mean just to the front door.
Heavy bags are carried inside . and
deposited' where it is convenient for the
man or lady of the house. Sometimes Jim
is even called upon to lend a hand' with
something eke, during delivery to one of
his senior customers. You certainly
wouldn't get service Race that in the city.
