*ea 'told the present Bruce County
Museum in Southampton cannot fulfil its
responsibilities or achieve its potential,
Henry Seders, of Seam and Russell Corr
sultents, outlined the highlights of the
Bruce County Museum: and Archives
study to council on Tuesday, Mar. 27.
Phase one of the study, which started
last summer and included reviewing
museum policies, staffing, collections and
their environments, would cost $5'.3
million.. The expansion of present
facilities in ;phase, one, excluding the pur-
chase of land, would be shared by the
county, the private sector and the federal
and provincial governments.
The report recommends council pun,'
chase additional land to the south of the
museum and hire four additional staff .
members. A proposed, site plan, which
calls for major expansion of the present
facility,,, would consolidate: the gallery
areas, collection, storage facilities and
`new archives area.
The collections, which are 'presently at
risk from deterioration, would be, en-
vironmentally controlled and protected in
a new building, Geld, Sears. " -
He said the "museum's furniture collec-
tion is, "quite outstanding," adding there
is :a good .collection of Bruce County
heritage to build o>i. However, the. section
of building which, houses the archives is
inadequate given the size of the
collection.
"The present elongated building is dif-
ficult to administer and for the visitor to
comprehend." .
In . order to purchase: the land sug-
gested, the county would have to
negotiate with the Anglican. Church. The
church; which has a rectory on • the land,
has indicated it would .consider accepting
a fair offer from the county, he, said.
"I am pleased with the recommenda-
tion to keep the museum in Southamp-
ton," said Norm Gurr, Southampton
councillor and chairman of the town's
museum committee. Gurr, along with
several other Southampton- council.
members, were introduced to council
prior to Sears' presentation.
Gurr . asked Sears why the study did
not include the option of obtaining the
land between the museum and a lake
west of the property for free.
Sears said the study did not seriously
consider this land because it is an "at-
tractive natural resource. I would be
loath to consider that."
The museum would also have a higher
profile if it expanded to the south, said
