Alvin's law He stressed , to the student body and teachers that there is no way of covering up what is wrong with you. The most im- portant thing is how, you feel inside about. yourself. He believes that everyone has a talent, ability or a special gift to do something unique. Alvin's talent is to play musical instruments. While he doesn't read music, he has mastered playing the piano, the trombone (with a special chair) and the drums. In 1977 he competed in a music festival beating out 196 other trombone players to bring home the gold. In 1978 he was voted one of 10 of the `top jazz players. He emphasized through personal stories how as in- dividuals we should not waste our talents or abilities and never to be embarradsed about yourself as a person. "It doesn't matter how you look, it's who you are that counts." As he ended his inspirational presenta- tion, resentertion, he quoted Alvin's law: "when the going gets tough ® get goingV
