Conferences Oppose QST
Three Ontario Confereoces of The
United Church of Canada have said NO
to the Federal Government's Goods and
Serviced Tax and called on the govrm
meat to seek just and equitable alter -
natty.. ter the tax.
Toronto, London and Hamilton Con-
ferences have all said that while they
support the idea of paying taxes in order
to pay for asocialthey are in
favour of reforming the system eo
that it is fair and more just.
The three Conferment, which acted
through ��dvedtheir congregationspresbyteries
to call on the government to sleek alter-
natives to the GST.
Hamilton Conference passed a motion
oppoeing the Goods and Services Tax
March 15 in a meeting of the Executive
at Carlisle, Ontario.
The Conferences say the GST is a
regressive form of taxation that does not
consider people's ability to pay and
therefore hurts middle and lower income
pole harder than higher Income people.
They also say that any reform of the
tax system in Canada should place a
• greater share of the tax load on

to become active on the GST because of
the effect it says the new tax will have
on lower income persons.
The Conferences are part of a number
. of organizations including businesses and.
labour. which have condemned the
government's GST in 'the past few
months.
The .Reverend Susan Eagle, ,Chairper-
son of the Co}Ordinating Committee of
Ontario Conferences said: "There is a
concern among church ' people that' the
government is going the wrong way fan
terms of taxation, hitting the most
vulnerable..:
. "The GST will be burden on those least
able to pay it", addedagle, a'communi
ty outreach worker with the poor of East
London.

The community welcomes back George

home -after vacationing in Florida. Seniors
Craft Day is Thursday, Mar. 22 in the
morning and afternoon at the Community
Centre. Quilting, plus other crafts are pro-
vided for anyone who would like to learn
or knows how to make these crafts.
Card and Games Night is being held on
Thursday Mar. 22 at 8 p.m. sharp at the
Community Centre. Everyone is welcome
to come out for an evening of fun and
fellowship. This event is sponsored by the..
Huron Lakeshore Friendship Club.
Seniors Shuffleboard is Monday' Mar. 26
at 1 p.m., and 7 p.m. at the community
centre. All membersare welcome to come
and play, or learn to play and have some
fun and a little exercise too.
Tip of the Week: Don't throw away those
training wheels that\you take off your kids
bicycles. You can attach them to the front
wheel of you wheelbarrow and you will
have much more control and never dump
the load.
