Agriculturai Society works to improve urban -rural relations
SY HEATinit HEATKU8INET
Vie rule played in the oo mu ity by the
Seaforth Agricultural Society has evolved
censiderably since it wasfirst a tablWred
in 1045.
"It used to be the agricultural society
alitigantheldor two'inlitigantSeptember to. elan the fair, and that was
the extent of nit," commented Fair Board
President Lyle Haney•
"Now it's big business," be said, noting
the Seaforth Aericultural Society turned
over approximately one quarter of .a
million dollars. in 190%
"That's a lot of money for . an.
agricultural society, and there are a lot
that are envious of it,"
Although members of the Agricultural
Society admit that the events they hast are.
generally fundraisers, those same events
usually serve a much bigger purpose ;as
well.
According to Mr. Haney the main aim of
the agricultural societytoday, is to improve
urban -rural relations. With only three per
cent of the total population fanners,, he
said it is important for the agricultural
community to educate the urban sectors on
such things as where their food comes
from. The Seaforth Agricultural Society
has managed to do that and more, through
the various events it offers.
At the fall fair, for example, the
Agricultural Society has incorporated .such
promotions as guessing the weight of live
cattle and pigs, and viewing of chicken
hatching, into the regular slate Of events,
Other events which make the; fall fair both
interesting and successful, are; a very ac-
tive homecraft division, the hosting of an
accredited Stan Jackson Hereford Shoal,
the Huron -Perth Jersey Parish. Show and
4-H County Show, as well as sheep shows,
heavy horse shows, a pork carcass com-
petition and a Junior Olympics., '
Last year the Fair Board tried to reach
an even broader spectrum of the popula-
tion by providing entertainment to both the
senior population and the handicapped.
This year it hopes to extend its reach even
more by offering an International Apaloosa
Horse Show and Sale. Admission to the fall
fair is free, and this year's fair will be
held on September 20 and 21.
"We try to appeal to all groups - young
and old," commented Ross Ribey, Vice
President of the Fair Board.
"We're the largest fall fair in Huron
County."
One of the recent aquisitions of the
Agricultural Society was Seaforth's Annual
Home and Garden Show. Abandonned
because of the work its original organizers.
felt was required to rim it, the show was,
immediately taken on by the Agricultural
Society, and quickly turned into a money-
making venture.
As its name suggests the show caters to
the home and garden, but has also served
the agricultural society well as another
means to educate the urban sector about
agricultural life. Among the many booths
and displays the agriculture society has in-
cluded displays by the various marketing
boards, as well as area 4-H clubs and dif-
ferent agricultural related businesses. This
year, in an effort to diversify the . show
even more, the agricultural society plans
to have it include more agricultural and
farm machinery, and become in the pro-
cess a Home, Garden' and Trade Show.
That show is set for April 25 and 26, and
again admission is free.
One of the other big events that the
Seaforth Agricultural Society is involved in
is the Midwestern Ontario Farm Toy,
Craft, Doll, Quilt and Antique Show.
Originally started as a farm toy and craft
show three years ago, this event was
originally expanded to give interest groups
to women, but has just continued to
blossom, with each of the five shows that
make up the giant extravaganza, now oc-
cupying its own building. Held the first
Sunday of December, this show has
become the. , e of its kind, sad attracts
ant aiudtence et Mt leant 3,000 people each
year, Free public le also available

The date for this year's show and sale is

for the year, the Agricultural Society has
