at Easter.
It's -been about 20 Years since the Ged-
des purchased their first goat. Just why
they purchased that goat is an interesting
story in itself. The goat's milk was used
to raise a newborn foal. Although the
mare had milk for her foal, the foal was
sick 'when born and unable to suck. The
Geddes milked the goat, and fed the foal
by bottle. Today, Judy and Bill have 30
or more goats.
They prefer the Nubian goat with some
Alpine in it's background. Judy feels that
this is the best breed for a good meat
goat as the deed Milk Well and therefore
Pat a good finish on. their kids. It he ad-
vantageous to the goat producer in terms
of dollars to have this finish at the
Christmas market. Judy indicated that a
kid weighing 30 to 50 pounds would be
ideal for that Christmas market. The
Geddes deliver their ..goats to the
stockyardsin Toronto for selling.
Judy has her own theory on how .to

Raising the "kids"
taken from the doe, and fed to the
newborn kid by mane ,of a catheter
(stomach tube). From her =peril**,
Judy finds this .method much easier than
nipple feeding plua it does not disturb the
newborns urge to suck.
Eveay norn: kid is vaccinated within
24 hours of birth for pulpy kidney and
white muscle disease. •
The kiclii are weaned at three months.
Both milking does and kids are fed creep
feed which consists of soybean, grain,
and bay. Judy indicated that this mix
should be as coarse as powdble ow goats
do not like finely ground feed. The creep
feed is high in 'scotch) which is essential
for higher milk production, and It also
puts a better finish on the kids. Non -
milking goats are fed whole grain and
hay, and all the goats at the Geddes
farm are given- salt and' mineral year
round.
The -Geddes also raise sheep and as
Judy said, "Having goats around comes
in handy when you have %plumed lambs
or multiples, as a doe's milk can be us-
ed to raise the lamb."

In the past, the Geddes have also
bought baby goats at the stockyards and
raised them en .their own doe's milk after
