The Tractor Doctor
Ries Miltenburg
According to The New World Dic-
tionary, "hobby's is defined as samething
that a person likesto do or• study in his
spare time; favorite pastime or avoca-
tion. For Ries Miltenburg of IL 7,
Lucknow that definition tits his love for
restoring old tractors. When he was a full
time dairy farmer, he spent his "spare"
time at it, but now that he is retired, his
• wife Marie says, he spends all of his
time at it! As Ries "says, it must be a
' hobby for it isn't a Miley Making effort,
- considering the number of hours that go
Into each project. As much as be may
joke, Ries derives a great =taunt of
pleasure from it; it doesn't matter what
title we put on it.
Even as a young man, Ries hived,
"tinkering" around machinery, as long as`
it had a motor. His wife, Marie, said he
was really bit by the bugafter they
toured an antique tractor museum in the
west in 1978, where old iron was lined up
behind fences, ,as far as the eye could
'see.' '•
Over 'the years Ries has restored so
many tractors even he can give a
definite number. Anyone who travels the
ninth concession of Ashfield Township can
attest to that fact. During .the good
• weather, along line of restored tractors
can be Seen glittering in the sun, former-
ly on the dairy farm he operated, and
. now just up the road at their new home.
' Re currently has six and at one time had
15 on hand. •
Last year seven were sold going to
such places as Manitoulin Island, Wind-
sor, London and Belle River. -
We all know everl,.fanner, or former
farmer has a favourite make of tractor.
For Ries it is the Case. When asked
' about the difficulty in obtaining parts for
these older models, he said the easiest to
obtain were for Case and John Deere.
• This.. tractor restoration "disease"
seems to run in the blood of the Mitten-
.
, • ••
burg family. San Tany, owner of Ashfield
• Service Centre, is a licensed mechanic
and lends his hand when called upon; son
Ben, who now owns the dairy farm, can
be caught tinkering as well, and another
son Maurice, who lives at home, is
almost as smitten with this' pastime as is
his dad.
Ries' pride and joy is his restored 1950
Fordson Major,. converted to rim on
wood. This wood -burning tractor was
featured in this paper in 1987 and is quite
familiar to area fair goers. The restora-
tion job Was completed in 1985. Having
no • blueprints to go by, he used his
*knowledge and memories, of taw they
worked and how to repair them, from
when they were used dab* the war in
1945. There was no gas ration in Europe.
and Holland, so it was all done by wood.
Even the buses, cars and trucks were set
.up for woodburning.
Since that article m 1987, Ries' Fordson
• has been featured in "Engineers and
Engines", a magazine published in Joliet, •
Illinois, as well as the "Farm • Show",
published in Lakeville, Minnesota. One
could say Ries and his Fordson Major
have become quite famous, when one
• views the stack of mail they have receiv-
ed as a result. If it keeps up, Ries,
you're going to need a secretary!
In the summer of 1989 the Fordson was
hauled to Niagara Falls to participate in
an invitational two day parade sponsored.
by Ford. Interest was keen as the wood -
burning attachment was taken apart and
explanations 'given as to how it worked.
When asked if the lady of the house
lent a hand as well, Ries jokingly replied,
yes that she washes all of them and
then he points to his collection of 16
miniatures that adorn the top of the kit-
chen cupboards.
For Ries Miltenburg retirement has not
brought about boredom, •it has simply
given him more time to spend on his
hobby. ' , •
