Similar to the C which has just
been outlined, is the D Bally, an *vont
usually held in August at the Caledon
Hunt Club. This is a one day outing in"
corponthig the same events at the C
Rally, but without the stable manage -
meet. Mao, this day Is for the younger er
riders.
w jumping is a major event held
also in *umiak and the winner of this
would go on to compete in the eastern
Canadian Championships at the CNE.
The Huron Bruce Club has had a number
of representatives at these championships
over the years. Anyone who le familiar -
with Ian Miller will visualize Just what
show jumping involves. It is more
dudienghig than stadium jininping with
the approached being more =eat- One
often sees this style of jumping on
television. •

Dressage
At the end of the suntimer the dressage
.competitions are held. This Is the one are
of competition with which the local club
appears to be the least involved. When
. asked why this would be, one family ex-
plained that it is the one area of riding
that is much More demanding and re-
quires more self-discipline. Because of
• this, it does not suit the temperament of
Young people. • -
Throughout the competitions, first to
' fifth placings at all regional events
receive points which are tallied. At the
end of the season, a trophy is presented
to the club with the highest points. In
.1977 there were 43 clubs, in the Western
•`" -Ontario Region.Huron-Bruce placed : •
tenth. In 1988, there were 18 clubs, and
Huron -Bruce placed first. And • in 1989,
• they placed second out of 17 clubs.
One might assume that to be in poi •
club, a youngster would have to be of ,a
competitive nature. This is not necessari-
ly .the case. Pony club shows are held at
a branch level and these are basically for ' • .
those younger members who prefer not to
• compete at high levels. It doesn't
however, give them 'show' experience in
games,
equitation, jumper classes, and
hunterclasses.

Parental Support
• um Pm am in-• inn ame gm me wen eim Non on =pm
• Parental support is very important to
the pony dub member. After all, it is the
parents who will have to help make deci-
sions on purchasing a "quality' horse,
and buying proper tack. If the youngster
• is competing, the parents will no, doubt
have to assumeresponsibility for
transporting the horne. If the club
• member is ill or away, mom or dad will
have to care for the horse. It is impor-
• tant, then, that parents do become
• involved.
As one parent mentioned, sometimes it
is they who need to be kohl:cited as well.
Take trailerhig, for instance. Driving too
fast, stopping too abruptly, cornering too
s These factors all upset that s;
. ous cargo in the trailer. And yes, a
does have a good memory. If that
• first ride in the italier creates an unplea-
sant experience, that horse is not going
to be easy to load the next time!
The parents are also very much involv-
ed in the management of the club, both
locally and regionally. Without them, it
would be difficult to.offer such a valuable
training base for the young people of this
area. Who knows. We might have an
other Ian Miller on our doorstep!
