Sheep industry faces obstacles
WAUCERION—The Comedian sheep
Chely likakaloy
and wool induatrY is facial oar*
abia-,cea• *MAY dne to international
coryetition and mill cloehliP Ia Canada.
Many wool mills lave been closing
.thirc _the ceuatrY, leaving producers
no .minve but to export the wool
wherever they can. As a resuk, Canadian
wool is being manufactured ailewhere
and then " beds into the country
as wool "
Producers are also fighting the inspor-
tation of meat all the time, the biggest
competitor being New Zealand and
Australia. Diotrict 2 sheep producers of
Grey and Bruce counties met in Walker-
ton in February to get sinie 011 the
industry. The half-day wkahop centered
around wool production rather than meat.
Mac Bolton, from the Wollaston branch
of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food (OMAF), attended the
workshop. The main presentation wee by
video and desk with the proper handling
ef wool and shearing.
"It's not that there have- been any ma-
jor changes (in the last few years). It's.
just .something the Page need to be
reminded of every once in a while,, " said.
Bolton.
, He said producers were encouraged to
separate wool into three piles, twobeing
poor quality wool, from the stomach and
rear area. This should be done before
work begins on the wool, the producers
:were told. The video, presentation also ex-
plained how wool grading was done.
On hand at the workshop were Elaine.

Bourgeois, who rum the Philempher's

Bolton said more manteachwers like
Bourgeois are needed for the Canadian
market to compete with other markets.
In New Zealand and Australia there
are a' lot of Marina sheep which produce
high quality wool. By manufacturing the
wool in their own countriee, producers
can import to Canada, for leas than what
Canadian farmers can sell it.
Meat was discussed to some point, one
suggestion was the production of organic
Iamb. It would be a largely new market
that would primarily be In large food
outlets and in other butcher shops that
wished to include it. The new market
would appeal to thou who have eaten lit-
tle lamb and to, some extent challenge
the New Zealand lamb market.
Plans are also underway by the
District 2 producers to promote. Ontario
lamb. A newly formed Promotions Com-
Mittee hosted its first meeting last
December. It is planning activities to pro-
mote their product and are looking for
area producers to get invaded in the
various promotions.
The project in the forefront right now
is the annual Sheep and Wool Show in
Markdale, set for May 28.
The percentage of sheep 'farmers in
Bruce County is low, compared to cattle
and pig farmers. According to the 1986
calms there are 443 sheep fanners in the -
county, the majority being in south
Bruce. Brant Township has the highest
number of producers with 24, followed by
Kincardine Township with 19 and Carrick
Township with 18.
