New funding of $28;11 million will be used to raise awareness of sexual assault against women, increase, funding for rape crisis. centres, improve emergency health care for victims and increase resources for the criminal justice system. A five year strategy has been designed to provide support to victims of sexual assault. Fundswill gotowards raising the public's • awareness. and . changing attitudes* towards this problem; Studies have shown that one in four • women is sexually assaulted at some time during her life often by someone she knows. Grants to community organizations acknowledge the important -role of local communities in raising public. awareness and dispelling • the myths that perpetuate sexual assault. Public education materials will be developed to complement and • support local education efforts. A sexual assault education package will also•be developed for use in schools. Local community groups are encouraged to develop pro- posals and apply for grants which sup- port local initiatives. The integrated strategy will reco the role of the justice system in ad ing issues . of violence against women. Funding will go to train police, Crown At- torneys and correctional services staff, and to provide additional resources to assist victims • and witnesses during the court process.. Emergency sexual assault care centres will be designated in 22 hospitals, and other health counselling services and training for health care professionals will also receive funding.
