God and Services Tax (GST) being im-
posedby the Conservative goverment.
"'This area (Bruce County) has a great
tourism base, winter and summer. If we
slap . a, .seven per cent tax on top of
already high gas prices and ,other things,.
we will kill ourselves in the tourism inn -
dust
GST is jut "replacing one bad tax
with another," she said, and it's
detrimental to society.
"Is it fair .that a woman on pension
will pay the same tax as a millionaire?"
She said sheis putting, together specifie
policies for tax reform that people can;
see In Bieck and. white and will see how
itwill bring down' the deficit.. •
Taxing is unavoidable, but, she said it
can be'done in a pro -active `way, similar
to the income tax system, where people
pay according to their Income and .during
their prime earning 'years. She also said
she thinks people are prepared topay
taxes if they , see the 'Wait" of their
labor.
As part of her platform, she also wants
to introduce family policies, which would
address issues like abortion and support
services.
Copps has gone on record saying she is
not pro -choice for which she. Was booed.
by a women's group in Toronto.
However, she said she realizes it is a
grey issue that will never please
everyone.
•
"We need a bill ofcompromise which
permits a woman's right to choose in .
early stages of pregnancy and not in the
later stages."
There also has to be more support.ser-
vices to prevent pregnancies, especially
in teenagers, she said. •
MELLOWING' OUT,
After; her speech; Copps addressed
questions from the audience, many of
which came from women and youth.. She
was also asked if her "mellowing oat" of
recent months was deliberate.
In her early days of federal politics,
she was berated by the press and public
for her outspoken ways and attacks on
the opposition. She was dubbed a
member of the "Rat Pack" and became
an instant household name. Many felt
those early outbursts would come back to
haunt her during the leadership race.
Copps said anyone who knows her,
knows "I'm not always a bull in a china
shop. I have the capacity to be a team
player and I have the capacity to get my
.message across. I'm not a vicious person
and I don't bear grudges."
"I've always been mellow, but you get

Because she is the first woman to run
for the Liberal leadership, she said she
,gets allot of women issues thrown at her.
However she said she Is not running a
woman's campaign and doesn't plan to
target any particular group.
• In the interview Thursday morning, she
adMiitted when it conies time to vote at
the June convention in Calgary, being a
woman will be a plus because 50 per cent
of the voting delegates will be women.
"It doesn't mean all the women are go
•ing to vote for me, but many ' will. It
Would be the .same for a farmer. Not all.
the farmers would vote for him, blit. he
would .probabiy'get most of the farming
vote."'
Audrey McLaughlin,.who recently won
the race for leader of the federal New
Democratic Party (NDP),. broke the ice
for worries' to be accepted. as a
leader, said Copps, but' she. doesn't
one woman is enough for the public to
handle in the House of Commons.
Anyone who thinks it would be too
much to have. `two women against one
man "probably wouldn't vote Liberal
anyway.,". she said.
She also • doesn't ,see herself and
McLaughlin splitting the woman's vote in
.the nettfederal election if she was
elected Liberal, leader.
"The NIP is at a low ebb,. I don't'ex-
pect them to"form, a government soon'
and.1 think most people will be thinking
* terms of Conservatives; and Liberals."
As for, her fellow candidates, it will be
up to the public to decide who they want
in power arid she told the crowd Wednes-
day night' she will .accept that decision.;
"I will not run. a ; campaign: against
'other Liberal$.'!
She came into . the race running a-
strong third to Jean ,Chretian and Paul
Martin Jr.. Now, she said, that . is
drastically changing and'she has 'moved
into a strong`second.
Some. people think her inexperience .will
hinder her chances at the leadership, but "
of an the declared candidates,, Chretian is
the only one who has more experience
than -her 13 years in political life. And,
she said she thinks people ere looking for
new blood and not • the "old guard,
politics Chretian represents.
"When , the people vote for a leader •
they have to look at who can provide the
best contrast to Brian Mulroney. I think
I am that person. But whatever the out-
come of the convention, we (Liberals)
will emerge. as a unified party and I{ will
be there es part of that unit as I have
been for -the -last five years."
