Marion McFarlane, co-ordinator of the
Lucknow Christmas and Benevolent
1''und, expressed great satisfaction with
the way area residents responded with
donations for the fund this year. Com-
pared to last year, response increased
to the plea for this humanitarian cause.
Thanks to the generosity of young and
old alike 29 families including 60
children, and eight single people en-
joyed a brighter Christmas. The
McQueen family of Dungannon, who lost
their home and all their possessions to
fire just prior to Christmas, were given
assistance.
Each adult, teenager and young child
received a gift. Mrs. McFarlane said
the type of toy donations this year was
heart warming. In addition to the gifts,
each family received a basket of food,

comprised of a turkey, meat and tin
goods.
The gifts and foad were delivered just
prior to Christmas by repuesentatives
from each local church nd service
clubs. The utmost care it .t,. ' en to en-
sure that the confidentiality of those
receiving is maintained. A large
number of the families involved this
year are w :,t Mrs. McFarlane calls the
"working poor"; those on minimum
wage, who during the year are able to
make it day by day, but come
Christmas they simply need a helping
hand to get over the "hump".
This fund is not only for Christmas;
it is there to help out those in need the

Stevens says they saved money for
over 20 years to buoy a parcel of land like
the 169 acre tract of reforested land.
Since they purchased the property in
June 1989, She has spent much of her
time gathering empty beer cans, chip
bags and styrofoam containers left by
trespassers who had been fishing
illegally.
Since hunting season started she has
added s nlil casings to the list of garbage.
Although she doesn't like people fishing
on the land, Stevens fears the hunters.
"Sure I was scared! These guys had
been drinking quite a bit. There were
four t ks strategically located around
our pt) erty (Dec.9). My husband and I
had to sit in our own home and liste to
the guns, the laughing and the dos,"
says Stevens.
These were not young guys either, they
were older guys. They didn't even drink
Canadian `beer, it was all American.

The McQueen family of Dungannon
and neighbours, who issued the plea for
assistance for the family, were com-
pletely overwhelmed with the response.
The family, who lest their home and
possessions to fire just prior to
Christmas were amazed with the
generosity of everyone. The M queens
had recently moved to Ashfield from
Waterloo. The family is now living in
the former Harold Maize residence on
the 4th concession of Ashfield.
Jim Drennan, one of the organizers
said the response was "tenic" and
they were ctually swamped with
clothing, ancr had to request :,t no
more be dropped off. The ft; ; t t 9 • ! y has
been provided with beds, chesterfield,
chairs, ft t_, stove, dishes, TV and small
appliances. A substantial amount of
money was also received!. And beim
Christ ;t,:s, ma animus folk made
sure the chil,,, ren had presents for
Christmas morning. Donations came in
from a wide area - Parkhill to Clifford
to Paisley and everywhere in be ten.
As Il6r. Drennan said, "the Claristraas
Spirit was very evident when this fami-
ly was in need!."

A quick c.: i to Harold Greer eIlic:.
the following facts for the month r
December. Most off ins thought we had
more nnowPa'll thin December than in
1' ria. The figures will surprise you.
•a
December 19t7 - rain 45 mm, snow
31.5 cm
December 19M - ratan 23 nam, snow
181 cn
December 19 - no rain, snow 971 cm.
As of December. 29 there teez 16 in-
ches of snow on the level; it had snow-
ed for 25 days during the month and
there were three days the temperature
rose to just above freezing.
The reason it appears that we have
more snow than ',.est year is due to the
fact that in 1930 we had a considerable
amount of rain and the snow disap-
red, whereas this year (69) the first
now has unfortunately stayed around.
