The beauty of ordinary things,
The laughter of children,
A heart that treats all men with under-
standing,
These are the gifts we ask
For you - for as - for all. •
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Mary's gentleness
When the shepherds saw the Babe, they
recounted what they had been told about
this Child, and all who heard were
astonished at what the shepherds said. But
Mary treasured all these things and
pondered them in her heart.
What is the gift which Mary brings to us
on this most holy night? Are we not moved
by her quiet gentleness as she holds her
Child close to her? Was it not in the ,deep
self giving of a parent's care that we first
learned of the unconditional love of a
Heavenly Father?
Do we not notice her humility as she ac-
cepts with gratitude the rude protection of
the stable in which she gave birth to her
son? Does not her willingness to accept
what is offered, however humble, remind
us of how we too are to be thankful for the
small daily blessings through which our
Lord reminds us of His protection and His
love.
Are we not touched by her receptivity as
she keeps all these wondrous experiences
within her heart? Are we not reminded of
our need to listen in faith and quietness to
the voice of God in our lives? Does Mary's
receptivity draw us to a deeper, quieter ex-
perience of prayer?
Are we not moved by Mary's gentle
strength as she, many years later, stands
at the foot of the cross on which her son is
dying? Does her strength encourage us in
our hour of need? Does her lonely vigil re-
mind us of times when we have shared the
pain and agony of someone we dearly
love?
As Mary holds her Child with such a gen-
tle love, let us also ponder the mystery of
this wondrous birth. For on this holy night,
Jesus, the Son of God was born into our
world and our lives. He came that we, in
our need might have life in all its fullness.
May we together express our deep
thanksgiving to God for such a wondrous
gift, such a wondrous saviour.
Yours in Christ,

My hopes for 1988
In the next year I hope I can become a
better Christian, a better athlete, a better
student, and a better person overall. I hope
I will make it through grade 8 alright, and
that starting high school will be fun.
For my neighbours, I hope they have a
good year and that everyone will have a
safe year.
For my country I hope Prime Minister
Mulroney will make the right choices and
that all the men in authority will also. I
also hope my country can buy more bombs
and missiles and more guns so we can pro-
tect ourselves.
For the world I hope for a better place to
live. I hope the gosple will be spread and
that the missionaries would be able to tell
people about Jesus without being
harassed.
