From the types of comments I have been receiving, it has become apparent that many people are under the mistaken im- pression that these centres will actually be "abortion clinics". This is definitely not the case. This centre, and those which will follow in other areas of the province, will provide a wide range of education, counselling and referral services to women. These will in- clude family planning and birth control, in- fertility counselling, pre-menstrual syn- drome and menopause education and sup- port, counselling on alternatives to abortion, and referral for women seeking therapeutic abortions. Free standing abortion clinics remain il- legal under the federal criminal code, and neither myself nor the government of which I am a part support the operating of these "free standing" clinics. Abortions will con- tinue to be performed only in accredited hospitals, following the approval of TO therapeutic abortion committees, as is the case now. The centres will provide only pre - and post -abortion counselling, as well as providing a referral service to those seeking abortions, advising them of which hospitals do perform this service. It is my hope that provision of better counselling services in the centres will help to minimize the number of unwanted pregnancies by enhancing awareness of birth control while at the same time ensur- ing that women have access to the services they need. Yours very truly, Jack Riddell, MPP - Huron, Minister of Agriculture and Food. To the Editor: While we are preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ the Ontario government has prepared for the killing of 1000s of children conceived but not yet born. Recently, Health Minister Elinor Caplan announced that "women's health centre" are planned for a dozen Ontario hospitals. A doctor in Peterborough, a city where one of these centres is proposed to be establish- ed, has said that they will duplicate ex- isting services with the exception of abor- tion. C.B.C. Radio has plainly called these centres abortion clinics. The government has earmarked 2.5 million dollars to establish the clinics and the Health Minister has stated that more money will be made available if necessary. Thus it is quite evident that our taxes are going toward the killing of children. Is there anything a person can do who is horrified by this news? Yes there is! First of all, pray. Pray to God, the giver of life, to change the hearts of all involved in the killing. Secondly, take time to write to your M.P.P. who can be reached at the Legislative Building, Queen's Park, Toronto M7A 1A2. You may also want to write to the health minister at Hepburn Block, Queen's Park, Toronto M7A 2C4. The premier would also benefit from your opinion. Thirdly, we can help those who are with child and in difficult circumstances, if not person to person, then through agencies such as Birthright. Birthright is an organization of volunteers that offers non- judgemental, onjudgemental, free help in all problem areas e.g. medical attention, clothing, housing, education, emotional support, etc. It is financed by donations. In our area they have offices in Hanover, Kincardine and Owen Sound. It is disheartening that a province which is spending 2.5 million dollars toward kill- ing babies in the womb is not using that amount to help mothers in difficulty. However, the government is determined to proceed with its dark plans. Probably because of the public outcry in Peterborough, Health Minister Caplan has told the Ontario legislature that future an- nouncements regarding the establishment of abortion clinics will not be made until after they have been approved and plans are implemented. Thus we shouldn't wait for an announce- ment of a clinic about to open in our area before acting. If we do nothing we are giving our con- sent to these proceedings. For the love•of God and His gift of life let us act now.
