Festive Post office thanks to Ripley students
Under the direction of teacher Miss Susan
Hamilton, students. from the Ripley District
School painted the windows in the front
room at the Ripley Post Office in festive
colours.
Thanks to post mistress Mrs. Marg
Thompson for marking down their names as
follows - Sarah Zdybel, Susie Paquette,
Jason Johnson, Dave Collins, Elizabeth
Plowright, Brian Campbell.
We are sure that a few compliments would
be appreciated after you look at their work.
Celebration 88 awards
Celebration 88 Awards - Thanks to Prin-
cipal Floyd Stanley for getting s around
to us -
The Government of Canada is sponsoring
a program called "Celebration 88 Awards"
to coincide with the Winter Olympics in
Calgary. The program honours Canadian
citizens who have demonstrated
characteristics which are in keeping with
the admirable ideals of the Olympic Spirit:
hard work, determination, moral character,
and dedication to community.
The "Celebration 88" awards program
has two parts. The "Celebration 88" medals
honour individuals who have made outstan-
ding contributions to amateur sports.
The "Celebration 88" certificates
recognize those who have contributed to the
quality of life in their community. These
certificates are to be awarded to people in
any field of endeavour.
A local committee has volunteered to seek
out deserving recipients in our community
of Ripley and Huron Township. If you would
like to nominate someone for a medal or cer-
tificate, please forward nominations in
writing, with reasons for your choice to
Larry Irwin, Box 243, Ripley, Ontario or
give your nominations to other committee
members Wally Pollock or Floyd Stanley.
Our Community will be awarded only six
medals and recipients will receive their
medals at a ceremony in conjunction with
our Winter Carnival, Feb. 13, 1988.
The following are the six award
categories for "Celebration 88" Medals:
1. Athlete - Choose one male for his
outstanding contrkbution to the sport and
community.
2. Athlete - Choose one female for her
outstanding contribution to the sport and
community.
3. Volunteer - Choose an individual for his
or her unselfish contribution to sports and
community.
4. Coach - Choose an individual for
devoting his or her time to the encourage-
ment of fair play and sportsmanship and for
bringing out the best in the athletes under
his or her guidance.
5. Official - Choose an individual for
devoting his or her time to the promotion of
fair play and sportsmanship.
6. Sponsor - Choose a business that has
contributed monetarily, or with services in
kind, towards the development of amateur
sport in the community.
DEADLINE for nominations to our local
committee members is December 30th,
1987.
Ripley Intermediate Hockey
The Ripley Roosters travelled up to meet
the Lions Head North Stars on Friday night
to battle to an 8-8 tie. The North Stars got a
4-0 lead in the first period, and kept a 7-3
lead after the second period. Kevin Stewart
counted for.3 of the Ripley goals while Brent
Armstrong and Carl Stanley each got two
and Dan Wilken got one.
Sunday night action in Lucknow gave
Ripley a big 9-3 win. Dan Wilken started off
the Ripley teams scoring while Todd
Walden, Devin Stewart and Brent Arm-
strong each added one to end the first period
4-2 in Ripley's favour. Art Clark and Steve
Simpson were the Lucknow scorers. An
unassisted goal for Todd Walden was the on-
ly marker in the second period (for Ripley) .
Allan Eadie managed one for Lucknow ear-
ly in the third period, but Ripley took the
next four which credited to Larry Colling,
Kevin Stewart, Brent Armstrong and Paul
Keelan. Next Ripley game is Sun. Dec. 20 vs
Durham at Ripley arena at 3 p.m.
Visited with Ab
Last Thursday Bill Bushell visited in
Ripley with Ab Wylds and with Clayton and
Doris Nicholson. At one time Bill was the
Ripley baker also he clerked after in the
hardware store.
Finished course at Georgian
Mrs. Betty Cook, Red Cross Homemaker,
has just completed a ten week course at
Georgian College in Owen Sound in the
Home Support program for homemakers.
Graduation was at the Clog and Thistle
Restaurant in Owen Sound on December 10.
Twenty-two ladies completed the course.
WMS Christmas meeting
The afternoon W.M.S. of Knox Church,
Ripley met at Huron Villa for its December
meeting. Mrs. Hackett opened it with words
of welcome followed by the Aim and Pur-
pose. All enjoyed a tape of Charlie Pryde's
"Don't Forget to Pray" followed by prayer.
It was decided to give treats to shut-ins at
Easter instead of Christmas, as there is so
much given at Christmas.
The roll call, Show and Tell something
pertaining to Christmas, was answered by
members. Mrs. Gladys Huston was
presented with a small gift for answering
the roll call the most through the year.
Cards were signed for Cathy Nugent, a pa-
tient in St. Joseph Hospital, London, and
Pearl McDonald, in Kincardine Hospital.
The officers for 1988 were installed by Mrs.
Hazel MacDonald. The devotions were
taken from Nov. Glad Tidings with Gladys
Huston, June Elliott, Mary Brown, and
Adeline Hackett taking part.
Starting with singing Hark the Herald
Angels, Mrs. Hazel MacDonald read the
Scriptures, Matt. 18, 1 to 25 and Luke 2,
verses 1 to 7. After the devotions, the hymn
While Shepherds Watched their Flocks by
Night was sung, the collection taken and
dedicated. Meeting closed with prayer and
singing Away in a Manger.
Lunch was prepared and served by
Gladys Huston and Adeline Hackett.
Won a cookbook
Mrs. Shirley MacDonald of Con 12 east in
Huron township was the winner of the cook
book "Company is coming" on Monday
morningthis week for answering a phone
question with "Avocado".
Canvassed the village
Christina Robertson canvassed Ripley for•
donations to the Canadian Bible Society,
Toronto recently. Chris had just returned
from there, visiting with her nephew Bill
Dowkes, of Varsity staff.
Ida and Corrie Piel who operate the I.C.
Greenhouses on the Sixth concession east in
Ripley have them started last week. The
first one in the five houses is in operation as
we understand.
Keep your tree fresh
By the way the recipe for keeping the
Christmas tree fresh and green is to have it
in water as follows - a cup of sugar, one and
half cup of Javex, and a gallon of water - and
do not have it where children can drink it.
Also the second cookbook was won this

Santa visits Lucknow W.I.
The Lucknow Women's Institute held
their Christmas meeting in the Parish Hall
on Tuesday, with 21 ladies enjoying a
delicious turkey dinner catered to by the
Anglican ladies.
The Ode and Mary Stewart Collect were
repeated.
Dorothy Brown presided over the
meeting and read a poem. A minute's
silence was held for Mrs. J. J. McKenzie
who had died that day.
The motto `Shelter of the Homeless' was
ably given by Edna Young.
A contest was conducted by Dorothy and
a sing song of carols by Marion McFarlane
with Mary MacGillivray at the piano.
The topic 'Who and Where are the
Homeless' was given by Mabel Whitby.
Readings were given by Dorothy Brown
and Grace Campbell.
Santa arrive (strongly resembling
Elizabeth Robinson) and handed out gifts
to all.
A most enjoyable afternoon came to a
close with the singing of the Queen.
Debbie Rintoul, daughter of Lee and Lila Rintoul of RR2 Lucknow, was awarded
Junior Champion and Reserve Grand Showman at the Junior Charlais Showmanship
Competition at this year's Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Debbie was alos the Reserve
Junior Angus Showman. Also shown is June Jackson from the Ontario Charolettes
and a judge from Quebec. Debbie's steer, a 1228 lbs Chianina Angus, sold to H and H
Leader Co. Ltd. Foodland at Guelph for $2.50 per pound. Debbie also had the Cham-
pion 4-11 Steer in the Queens Guineas competition for the 1228-1270 pound division.
There were seven weight divisions ranging from 900 lbs to 1496 lbs with a total of 117
