HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-12-09, Page 15Preparing for Christmas The South Kinloss W.M.S. met on Thurs- day last week to celebrate their Annual Christmas Meeting. Mrs. Harold Howald was the hostess in the manse. A dessert luncheon was served prior to the meeting by Mrs. Rev. Allison Ramsay and directors Mrs. Jack Forrester, Mrs. Gary Austin, Mrs. Fred deBoer and Mrs. William Dickie. Mrs. Allan MacDongali, president, open- ed the meeting with the Christmas Beatitudes. Mrs. Harold Howald read Luke 1:26. Mrs. Fred deBoer very capably spoke toward the scripture on faith and obedience as seen in Mary and Elizabeth. Prayer Circle included Mrs. Donald Maclntyre, Mrs. Bruce Hamilton and Mrs. Jack Needham. Gifts were brought in answer to roll call to be designated to 25 residents of Pinecrest Manor. An inspiring duet was sung by Mrs. Bruce Colwell and Mrs. Don Bell. Mrs Gary Austin gave a reading. This was followed by the offerings and offertory prayer. Various business matters were discuss- ed then the annual reports were read for approval. Mrs. Evan Keith installed the new ex- ecutive: Mrs. Allan MacDougall turned over the meeting at this time to incumbent president, Mrs. Leonard Clarke. Mrs. Fred deBoer handed out booklets for our enrichment entitled "The Twelve Ways of Christmas". Mrs. William Dickie gave the courtesy remarks responded to by Mrs. Allison Ramsay. A closing prayer was heard before a selection of lovely Christmas favorites was sung. Trinity UCW Trinity U.C.W. held their regular meeting at the home of Mrs. Bob Roberts, Dungannon on November 12th at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Blake Alton opened the meeting with a poem entitled "a Friend". The devotions were in charge of Mrs. Frank Alton and Mrs. Marvin Scott. The scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Scott, Psalm 46. The meditation on Remembrance Day was read by Mrs. Alton. Hymn "Unward Christian Soldiers" brought the devotions to a close with a prayer. The roll call on a remembrance thought or verse was answered by 15 members. The offering was received and dedicated. Mrs. Murray Irvin lead us in Bible Study on "Jesus iand the Bent Women". Mrs. Larry Wilkens was in charge of the Bible Study on a review of what we had learned this past year. Mrs. William Irvin gave a reading entitl- ed "Why Wear a Poppy". The service of the lost coin was observed. The minutes of the October meeting and potluck supper were read and approved. Mrs. Warren Zinn, gave the treasurers report. The hymn "Lord, while for all mankind we pray" brought the meeting to a close. A soeial hour followed the meeting. Noon pot luck for 24 The Christmas meeting of the Lucknow Afternoon Women's Missionary Society was held at the home of,Mrs. A. Ramsay at noon with a pot luck dinner. The meeting was presided by Rhoda MacKenzie by a call to worship and prayer. Following the singing of "Little Town of Bethlehem", the motto was repeated and roll call was answered by 24 ladies. A minute of silence was observed for the late Mrs. Robert Reid. The Christmas service, "There Will be Room", was read by Mrs. J. Little and Mrs. Ken Laidlaw. Mrs. Donalda Moffat tended the organ for the singing of hymns. Mrs. W. Wilson and Mrs. Bert Moffatt read scriptures while the Christmas message was taken • by, Mrs. Celcia Ait- chison. A prayer was then offered by Rhoda MacKenzie. Mrs. Mildred Loree favourad all with a solo, "No Room". The offering was received abd an offer- tory prayer was read by Mrs. Little: The business portion of the meeting followed with the installation of officers. Mrs. Rhoda MacKenzie will act as presi- dent; Mrs. Little as first vice president; second vice will be Mrs. Aitchison; third vice will be Mrs. Jessie Johnston; the treasurer will be Mrs. Mildred Loree while Mrs. Ken Laidlaw handles the duties of secretary. Mrs. Bert Moffatt and Mrs. Willima Henderson will be pianists for the group while the In Memorium secretary will be Mrs. Noble Johnston. Mrs. Ait- chison will also handle the Library and Literacy duties while glad tidings will be taken care of by Mrs. Stanley. Mrs. C. Brown will be the historian while the social committee will consist of Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Little, Mrs. Roy Finlayson and Mrs. Bob Farrish. The hymn "Silent Night" closed the meeting and Mrs. Jessie Johnston offered a prayer. The Christmas meeting of the St. Helen's Women's Institute was held in the hall last week with a pot -luck lunch beginning at 12:30. The roll call ' was answered with , a Christmas verse and a sttmped Christmas card to be sent to former members and shut-ins. The guest speaker was Donna Sue from Valley Green Flowes in Lucknow. She demonstrated how to tie two types of bows suitable for a flower arrangement or a large parcel. She also showed the group an inexpensive table centre for Christmas. She gave some very useful hints about the use of flowers and how to arrange them to their best advantage. The Christmas arrangement she brought was raffled off and won by Elaine Errington. The meeting continued with the minutes and the financial report given by secretary -treasurer Muriel Moffatt. A donation will be sent to Town and Country Homemakers in Wingham. It was also decided that parcels of Christmas goodies be made up on December 14 for the shut-ins in the area. Each members then told of a Christmas custom observed by their family followed by a $a gift value exchange of something practical oEach member also , brought canned goods for the Lucknow Christmas Fund. Christmas carols were sung under the direction of Norma Raynard. It was decid- ed that there will be a Christmas sing -song before the next shoot party, so come about 8 p.m. and add some Christmas spirit to the evening. A vote of thanks was given to Elaine Err- ington for decorating the hall so beautiful- ly for the season.
