To the Editor;
Just to brighten your day, and perhaps
that of your readers, I thought you might
get a smile, and maybe ask a few ques-
tions, when you read the following adver-
tisement from the classified advertising
columns of the Whitehorse Star dated July
31, 1987:
FOR SALE;
PARACHUTE, used once, never opened.
668-2312
Just what exactly is the buyer, if any,
getting here?
Regards,
George A. Newbold
Editor's Note:
Thanks for the laugh, George. I found a
similar classified ad that brought a smile
to my face:
FOR SALE;
WATERBED, owners drifting apart.
Dear Editor:
As the Christmas season approaches, we
more fortunate Canadians should spend a
few moments thinking of those people in
the world who live in less favorable condi-
tions. So much of Christmas is a feast —
not only for our palates, but also for our
eyes. We see the sparkling colored lights,
the brightly decorated store windows, and
the look of wonder in a child's eyes. But
have your readers ever thought what it
would be like to be blind and to be deprived
of such sight?
According to the World Health Organiza-
tion, there are over 40 -million blind people
in the world — mostly in developing coun-
tries. It is a fact that we live in "careless"
times, and although many of us say we
"care", how do we go about alleviating the
suffering of our fellow human beings? One
comment I heard this year was "I don't
know how to care — r whereto begin."
Caring comes from within us; it isn't
something we, don, like a cloak at this time
of year. One way to learn how to care is to
join a team of volunteers that supports a
Canadian -based organization called opera-
tion eyesight universal (OEU). OEU's an-
nual goal for its work in the Developing
World is to treat one -million eyes and to
restore sight to 100,000 curable blind
people.
Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough
to be part of an OEU volunteer team that
toured India. Across that vast sub-
continent, I saw for myself how effectively
OEU uses its funds, spending only 10 per-
cent of the monies raised on promotion and
administration. The remaining 90 percent
goes to finance blindness prevention and
sight -restoration projects,where not just
sight is restored, but also human dignity.
From the squalid slums of Bombay to
the impressive captial city of New Delhi, I .
witnessed the selfless dedication of the In-
dian doctors, nurses and administrators.
With the help of OEU, they are creating
new beginnings and than ing lives for as
little as $25 per patient. Each $25 raised in
Canada goes to finance cataract surgery,
medication, hospitalization, food, cataract
glasses and follow-up care for a patient.
An Indian proverb tells us "All that is
not given is lost.",x. Before we lose our
perspective on the true meaning of
Christmas --- God's gift to the world — why
not give one of the most precious gifts of all
— the gift of sight?
Donations may be sent to Operation
Eyesight Universal, P.O. Box 123, Station
"M", Calgary, Alberta T2P 2H6. Donors
will receive not only a receipt for income
tax purposes, but also a patient identifica-
tion card, indicating which patient in the
Developing World received this extra
special gift.

Local lady becomes sales director
Mary Kay Ash, founder and chairman of
the Dallas -based Mary Kay Cosmetics, r
has announced the appointment of Dawna
Richardson of Lucknow to sales director in
the independent field marketing
organization.
In preparation for her new position, Ms.
Richardson attended a week-long training
session at Mary Kay's international head-
quarters in Dallas, Texas. A wide range of
topics were covered at the meetings and
Dawna says she was able to bring home a
great deal of information of interest to her
local customers.
Dawna was named sales director follow-
ing a three-month qualification period in
which she developed a personal unit of con-
sultants and exceeded specific company
goals. As a sales director, she will provide
leadership, training and management for
the other consultants in her unit.
Dawna joins an elite group of only 219
sales directors in Canada who coordinate
and assist the efforts of the more than
100,000 independent beauty consultants
who demonstarte and sell Mary Kay pro-
ducts across North America.
Congratulations to Dawna' on this ap-
pointment. We know she has worked very
hard to achieve the position of sales
director.
Dawna Richardson of Lucknow, shown on left, was recently named to the position of
sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics. That's Mary Kay Ash herself in the middle
with another recently appointed director, Nancy Britt on the right. Congratulations,
Dawna, Your hard work and effort has paid off.
