Many will miss "Grandma Jennie"
Two weep ago on Monday, Nov. 9 at 8
p.m. the Ripley Agricultural Society met in
the Ripley Huron Central School for their se-
cond last meeting of the year 1987. Present
were president Bob Thompson, treasurer
Sheila MacDonald, Diane Brooks, Gordon
Patterson, Dan A. MacDonald, Peter Van
Sickle, and Margery MacDonald - president
of the lady directors. In the short form she
writes her name Marge and pronounces it
Secretary Don MacTavish and his wife
Anna are at their home in Tamarac,
Florida. So Sheila MacDonald took his place
for the time being. Following the minutes of
the October meeting, Sheila read Don's let-
ter

secretary of the Ripley fall fair.
Gordon Patterson, Helen Irwin and Marge
MacDonald were the Ripley directors atten-
ding the District 10 meeting on Saturday,
Nov. 7 and they reported on it. The next
meeting of the Ripley Society will be on
Monday Dec. 7. Thanks to Marge Mac-
Donald for this information. Also Ab says
"thanks" to Don MacTavish for all those
reports which he wrote out and brought here
for this column - always pressed for written
items, they were appreciated.
Saw display at the fair
On Tuesday afternoon last week Tom and
Betty Schmidt of Mildmay were in Ripley.
In Ripley here they talked to Carmon Court-
ney at the Seed Store and then called to see
Ab Wylds at the house here. Just the day
before Tom had been in Toronto and he saw
the grain display at the Royal Winter Fair.
Also. on the Friday Jim Needham saw the
judged sheaves.
So far we have not learned the name of the
first prize winner in the wheat sheaves. Bet-
ty Schmidt got second irY the wheat sheaves.
The name was blurred - Now will wait till
next year.
Bruce County did well in the livestock
classes. For the second year in a row they
got the Queen's Guineas class last Friday.
This time it was a girl further north in
Bruce.
New at the bank
Fran Edwards is the new lady on the staff
at the Ripley Royal Bank with manager
Lillian Abbott and Marj MacTavish. Fran is
taking the place of Marilyn Freer. Mrs. Ed-
wards lives on the main street in Ripley
one block east of the main corner.
Euchre party held
There were eight tables of euchre players
at the Legion Hall on Monday last. The prize
winners were Myrtle Perch, Ethel France,
Margaret Gemmell and Duncan Thorburn.
The player receiving the most lone hands
was Bette MacLeod. Another euchre will be
held on November 30th at 2 p.m.
Went to Lions meeting
On Sunday November 22 President Grant
McDonald and Secretary Doug Coupes of
the Ripley and District Lions were in
Seaforth attending a Lions Cabinet meeting.
Grant Chisholm of Lucknow announced that
$32,000 were received for District A9.
JANE (GRANDMA JENNIE McLEAN
Jennie (Hellyer) McLean of Ripley pass-
ed away in Kincardine and District General
Hospital on Sunday November 15,1987 in her
96th year.
She was born on February 3rd, 1892 at
Swan Lake north of Ferndale in Eastnor
Township, Bruce County. She was the last
surviving member of a family of ten. Her
parents were Nelson Hellyer and Mary
Schmidt. She married George McLean Sr.
and resided in Lions head for a few years
and then moved to Ripley on the first of
May, 1926.
She is survived by her son George, two
daughters -yin -law, eight grandchildren, and
eight great-grandchildren. She was
predeceased by husband George McLean
Sr., and two sons William(Bill) and Jack.

Jennie McLean, known to most people as
Grandma Jennie, was well liked and
respected. She was a generous person and
always was willing to share what she had.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday
November 17 at the MacKenzie -McCreath
Funeral Home in Ripley with Rev. Hugh
Nugent of Knox Presbyterian Church,
Ripley officiating.
Pall bearers were grandson Wayne
McLean, great grandsons Michael Tout and
Richard Tout, and nephews - Roy Hellyer,
George Hellyer, and Walter Hellyer. Flower
bearers were great-grandchildren Lisa
McIntyre, Chris MacDonald and Lisa
McLean.
Interment was in Ripley Cemetery.
In Walk -a -dog a -then
On Sunday, Oct. 4th Lion President Grant
McDonald and his family attended the
Walk-a-dog-a-thon in Wingham to represent
his Ripley and District Lions Club. They
completed the 10,km route.
A total of $229. was pledged. A $100 dona-
tion from the club as well as private pledges
from individual members. A special thank
you from Lion Grant for your support.
Ripley Intermediate Hockey
Lions Head North Stars played in Ripley
Sunday afternoon. A close game all through,
Ripley took the lead of 4-2 in the first period
and 6-4 the second period, but Lions Head
came from behind and took the game 8-7
with only 11 seconds left to play.
Kevin Stewart came good for two of
Ripleys markers while Kevin Boyle, Dan
Wilken, Brent Armstrong, Mark Stanley
and -Sean Johnston each got one.
Ripley will host Kincardine Friday night
at 8:30 p.m.
Archibald Bonnett of RR 1, Holyrood pass-
ed away last Thursday, Nov. 19, 1987 in
Wingham and District Hospital. He was in
his 88th year - born Feb. 22, 1900 in Bruce
Township.
The funeral service was held Saturday
afternoon in the Pavey Linklater Funeral
Homein Kincardine at 2 p.m. Sat. Nov. 21,
1987. Mr. William H. Baird of Teeswater and
Kinloss Presbyterian Church officiating. In-
terment followed in Kincardine Cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters; Ruby,
Mrs. Donald Peterbaugh of Ripley, Jean,
Mrs. Richard Winter of Stratford and three
sons: Lloyd and Robert- Bonnett of RR 1,
Holyrood, and James of Barrie. Also nine
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
He was predeceased by five brothers,
three sisters, and his wife the former Annie
Stanley. Sympathies extended to the family.
