Sharing and Caring
Sharing and Caring was the theme of the
73rd Annual Convention of the London
Area Women's Institute held October 15
and 16 at the St. Mary's Centre. The Thurs-
day session of the convention saw an atten-
dance of 291 while Friday drew 228
members and guests.
As guest speaker at the Thursday even-
ing banquet, Mayor Paul Murray told of
the work done by the Salvation Army to aid
the homeless. He reported that most of the
homeless in Canada are under 25 years of
age and that homeless women and
children, as well as men, are on the in-
crease in this country. In April of this year,
there were 100,000 homeless in Canada.
Mr. Murray also stated that poverty is a
worldwide problem and that 1987 has been
designated International Year of Shelter
for the Homeless.
The London Area Women's Institute
presented Mary Pardy scholarships to
three 'young people as part of the business
conducted at the convention. Catherine
Sutherland of Middlesex, Susan Moodie
and Heather Gillett, both of Oxford Coun-
ty, were the worthy receipiants. All three
girls are currently pursuing university
degrees.
A 90th Anniversary Scholarship was
given to Mary Alice Roth, a Women's In-
st'tute member who is working on her B.A.
in ducation.
M aret Munro, President of the
Federa ed Women's Institutes of Ontario,
reported on her activities as president.
Lira Ryan will replace Joyce Canning as
Co-ordinator of Rural Organizations at
Guelph until the winter of 1988 while Mrs.
Canning works with Agriculture in the
Classroom.
It was also announced. that a Leadership
Development.. Seminar will be held in
Kingston nekt May. This seminar is
available for all Public Relation Officers
and Program Co-ordinators.
The Federated Women's Institutes of
Canada will hold their 1988 convention in
Newfoundland starting June 23. Ontario
has agreed to send a total of 150 delegates.
The Women's Institutes of Ontario have
donated $50,000 to the University of Guelph
to help with the construction of a Nutrition
Laboratory there.
It should also be noted that video presen-
tations on lobbying, the new Family Law
Act and Going it Alone with Confidence are
now available through local O.M.A.F.
offices.
During her presentation, Mrs. Munro
spoke of visiting with the women of China.
The Chinese women wondered why there
would ever be divorce in Canada where
couples are allowed to choose their own
mates.
Convenors Muriel Lewis, Jean Roberts,
Dorothy Dobbie, Joyce Morgan and Lois
Elliott reported on how Caring and Shar-
ing fits into the various topic areas.
Three resolutions brought before the
general assembly included transportation
needs of the rural disabled, specific equip-
ment needs of disabled adults and AIDS
testing for immigrants. These resolutions
were sustained at the Area Level.
Perth County presented a comical skit
on a day in the life of four rural women.
The election of officers was conducted
by the Ontario President Margaret Munro.
New Provincial Board Directors and alter-
nates were also elected at the annual
convention.
Deer tags
increased
A dramatic increase in the number of deer
in Ontario allowed the Ministry of Natural
Resources to issue validation tags to 61,548
hunters to hunt antlerless deer this year.
That represents an increase of more than
10,000 over last year.
The names were selected in a random
draw from more than 83,000 applicants.
The number of applications for 1987 tags
increased by 10 per cent over 1986, and 74
per cent of all hunters applying for th ags
were successful in the draw.
A record 36,357 deer were harvested a
year, and MNR biologists predict that more
than 40,000 will be taken in 1987. Almost one
third of the 121,345 hunters last year were
successful in harvesting a deer and the rate
is expected to rise this year.
"The provincial deer population has
doubled in size, " to more than 200,000
animals, since the antlerless deer validation -
tag program was introduced in 1980 to help
reduce the harvest of antlerless animals."
Natural Resources Minister Vincent Kerrio
said. "Relatively mild winters have also
contributed to the increased deer
population."
At the same time, the number of valida-
tion tags available has more than quadrupl-
ed, from 16,723 in 1980 to more than 71,000
this year. Not all the available '1987 tags
were issued this year because there was not
enough demand for them in some areas,
particularly in wildlife management units
designated for archery hunting.
MNR wants to hold . deer population den-
sities at a level just below the capacity of the
range. This will sustain the health of the
animals and avoid the dramatic changes in
deer numbers often associated with
overpopulation.
Deer hunting seasons open in many areas
in the province on November 2. Most ar-
chery seasons begin October 15. Hunters
should check the Summary of Hunting
!°Regulations, 1987-88, for specific dates;!,.,,,,,n.,,.,
