New Canada Movement
Dear Editor;
"Save Agriculture and Save Canada", is
a headline that could well have been taken
from any current paper. It wasn't. It ap-
peared in the Weekly Sun in 1933.
This slogan was the basis for the forma-
tion of a group known as the New Canada
Movement. At the time, it was felt the
grave situation facing agriculture in
Canada was a challenge to the ryouth of
rural areas to awaken and do something
about it.
During the winter of 1933. countries such
as yours were stormed in more ways than
one. Working through one of the bitterest
winters on record, the New Canada Move-
ment swept through county after county,
gaining a membership of 7,021 farmers.
Were you part of this event? Do you have
any recollections of meetings or the people
involved? If you do, your input is urgently
needed. Verterans of the New Canada
Movement, with the support of a New
Horizons grant, have asked me to docu-
ment this period in history. It will not be
accurate or complete without the input of
the people actually involved.
The New Canada Movement didn't last
very long, but it had a powerful effect on
the rural community. From it sprang the
Farm Radio Forum, Folk Schools and the
Farm Credit Corporation.
Please forward' any information you
might have or recall to the following
address.

Dear Editor;
If we were to read in your newspaper
that two jumbo jets had collided in the air,
leaving no survivors, we would be shocked
and deeply saddened.
But if we were to discover that this
tragedy is happening not once a year, but
every single day of the year, killing over
350,000 people in the United States and
32,000 in Canada annually, we would rise
TO
up in indignation, demaning that air traffic
be made safer.
Yet, when this tragedy happens quietly
as a direct result of cancer caused by
tobacco use, we are strangely quiet.
The time for silence has passed. We
must unite to bring an end to the suffering
and death caused by tobacco use.
We have, however, a formidable oppo-
nent in this cause; an opponent as vicious
and unconscionable as any enemy has ever
been, dedicated to the task of increasing
tobacco sales worldwide, especially
among defensless Third World peoples.
That enemy is none other than the multi-
national corporations that control the
fabulously profitable cigarette industry.
It is this unprincipled industry that has
launched a major unlimited cost campaign
in an effort to defeat Bill C-51, a Bill cur-
rently before our federal government that
would bring an end to theadvertising of
tabacco products in Canada..It is the same
industry that is spending $80 million a year
in Canada on advertising aimed at
recruiting new, young smokers.
Canadians who care ought to immediate-
ly write to The Honourable Jake Epp,
Minister of National Health and Welfare
and to their members of Parliament, ex-
pressing strong support for Bill C-51 that
would bring an end to tobacco advertising
in Canada by 1989.
We have never had a better chance to ex-
press our collective indignation against
the profit-seeking tobacco empire. But
time is running out. Please write now and
support this important life-saving cause.
Sincerely,
Karl N. Burden

Inexpensive tillage tool
The least expensive way to obtain a con-
servative tillage tool may be to modify
your existing mouldboard plow.
Several farmers who are co-operating
with the District have modified their plows
by replacing mouldboards with sweep
teeth to leave more residue on the soil sur-
face after fall tillage. A similar modified
plow is available this fall to District co-
operators.
The sweep teeth give all the benefits of
mouldboard plowing by cutting, lifting,
and shattering the soil while maintaining
crop residue on the soil surface. This
makes fall tillage on clay loam soils possi-
ble without burying all the crop residue, an
important part in erosion control.
Very often farmers realize that crop
residue is required to control erosion in a
field -- but they are reluctant to no -till or
spring plow the heavier soils. A modified
plow allows tillage and residue manage-
ment to be carried out simultaneously in
the fall.
The recently -announced government in-
centives to encourage residue cover
greater than 20 per cent after planting will
certainly increase interest in this area. To
achieve this cover in spring it must be
there in the fall.
The District's recently acquired
modified plow can be used with sweep or
chisel point teeth. It is available free of
charge to co-operators on a 10 -acre trial
basis. This will allow farmers to "try
before they buy".
To book the modified plow fer your field,
call Geoff King at the Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority at 335-3557, Brent Ken-
nedy at the Clinton OMAF office at
1-800-265.5170, or Robert Traut at the
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority
at 235-2610.
The Huron Soil and Water Conservation
District is a joint agricultural soil and
water conservation program.
