Is this first time for such an honor?
Rev. Hugh Nugent, minister of Knox,
Ripley and Ashfield Presbyterian Churches
will be attending the fall sessions of the
Synod of Hamilton and London, being held
at London on October 26 and 27. This Synod
comprises all of the Presbyterian Churches
in South Western Ontario from Wiarton,
Owen Sound, and Meaford in the north to
Hamilton, Niagara Falls and Windsor in the
south.
In October, 1986 Mr. Nugent was
distinguished by being elected Moderator of
Synod for the coming year and has acted in
that capacity since then. This is the first
time that a Minister from the Ripley
Ashfield Charge has been honoured in this
way.
The Clerk of Synod, for the past number of
years, has been Dr, R. Douglas MacDonald
of Bruce Beach who is also a member of
Ripley Knox Presbyterian Church. Con-
gregation. It is somewhat unique that con-
gregation at Knox is presently represented

tyn at the piano. Margaret Scott, convenor
for the meeting, introduced Mrs. Audrey
Ferguson, an active person in the Kincar-
dine and District Association for the Han-
dicapped. She spoke briefly and introduced
Miss Marlene Webb, who in turn introduced
Mrs. Alice McVeigh.
These Kincardine ladies both spoke on
their particular involvement with the
association. They stated how rewarding it
was to see these people learning skills at
which they can earn a minimum wage, such
as cooking, delivering mail, assisting in a
store, also in day care as volunteers as
grass cutting. Eighty percent of the cost to
run these centres is paid by the Ministry of
Social Services and the parents and con-
tributions by the public. Reading, speech,
their own banking, computers, and sports is
taught.
There will be a provincial skating com-
petition in Kincardine this fall. This is speed
skating and figure skating by the handicap-
ped. A bed is available for a handicapped
person at the centre. The person, may be a
parent, will be taught the same as the
residents and take same responsibilities.
The staff is chosen carefully and must be
caring. Kincardine has food for those from
baby food on up. The organization was
started in 1963 and has expanded in later
years.
Plans are under way for the Legion ban-
quet on November 21st. Ripley won first
prize in the Group Display at the Fair "Our
Pioneer Heritage" Joyce Macpherson gave
the courtesies. A small token was presented
to the guest. They will use it for Handicap-
ped residents. Donalda McLean will be the
delegate to the Area Convention at Durham
October 5th.
Beef club finishes up

will hold an achievement banquet on. Fri-

Has name in the drum
Mrs. Shirley (Doug) MacDonald of the
12th concession was lucky last Wednesday
morning Oct. 7, 1987, to have her call to
C.K.N.X. on the Second Honeymoon contest
accepted. Her name will be drawn for a se-
cond honeymoon in the Dominican
Republic. The draw has been announced for
Monday November 2.
Two local people died
On the "In Memoriam'2 on Friday Oct. 9,
1987 were the names of two persons.known
in this area. One was Harry Doughty a
former Walkerton Men's wear storekeeper
and the other was Mrs. Allan MacDonald -
the former Charlotte Brown of Tiverton.
Harry was once the top hitter in Senior
Ontario baseball playing for Windsor with
429 for the year's record. In 1945 he umpired
some games for the Ripley Flyers intheir
drive for the W.O.A.A. ladies Softball
Championship.
Also his sister was the wife of Bill Culbert
who recently passed -away a few weeks ago -
older brother of Watt. Culbert.
More fall fair results
On Sat. morning Sept. 26 the main Ripley
fair day, just after nine, we took a walk
across the back way and thanks to Ralph
Grubb who was letting a commercial
display into the west side of the arena we got
in too to have a close look at a couple more
classes. One of these was the display of
quilts - a turn back to the C.N.E. show when
we used to look for Mrs. Evelyn Bridge's
quilt down there to see if it got first, which it
did. One thing, the quilts here were better
displayed than at Ex as we remember.
Come to think about displays at the Ex -
we put up the shelves for the 1967 grain show
underneath the seating in the Coliseum.
Thanks to work with Ripley's master
builder John Robertson this was no big deal.
We also brushed away the foreman of the
carpenter's union and then the same for the
sweepers union in cleaning up and then sat
by to watch the grain judges and directors
work.
Well back here to our Ripley fair here are
some prize winners here - Grand Champion
quilt - Pine River U.C.W. - Mrs. Sharon
Courtney; Reserve Champion quilt - Mrs.
Mildred Wylds of Ripley. There were
several classes of quilts so more firsts went
Nelda McKee,Margaret Harkness, Seconds
to Lizzie Geddes, Margaret Harkness, and
Joyce Elphick. Prizes for afghans and com-
forters to Grace Murray, Elva Lowry, Fran
Edwards, Zilia Hedley to mention just a
few.
The lady directors in charge of the
needlework class 6 are Marilyn Johnston,
Judy Snobelen, Mary Culbert, and Helen Ir-
win and they made the following written ac-
count for Ab Wylds - over all total points
