Grade Ones get first hand look at cider press
BR6OKS IDE
Welcome to another year of Brookside
news. The editors for this year are Rhonda
Dickson, Joel Wright and Teresa Jeffer-
son. We will be planning and writing many
exciting and interesting articles
throughout the year. We hope you will en-
joy the news and articles we will present.
The editors would like to thank Mr. Farnell
and Mrs. Clarke who will act as editors in
chief.
KINDERGARTEN I
Mrs. Cameron's Kindergarten I class
are learning about colours. This week they
made black sheep and white clouds that
they covered with popcorn.
KINDERGARTEN II
In Mrs. Young's Kindergarten II class,
they are busy doing many activities about
colours and autumn. We have done ac-
tivities with numbers 1 and 2. We also
sponge painted autumn leaves for our
bulletin board.

in University Hospital. Many thanks for

HACKETT
Ian and Kathy would like to thank Dr.
Bekasiak and Emily Phillips for the safe
arrival of their daughter and thanks to the
nurses at Wingham Hospital for the care of
Kathy and Amber. -40
to Art Bell's Fruit Farm on Wednesday,
September 30. We like seeing the apple
cider made and really liked tasting it. The
walk through orchard was wet, but fun. We
will be studying apples and tasting some of
the yummy apple products.
ROOM 1, GRADE 1
Miss Jewitt's grade 1 room 1 and Miss
Mathers' grade 1 room 5 visited Art Bell's
apple orchard where they watched apples
being pressed into cider. They also
gathered Spy apples from the ground to br-
ing back to the school for an apple study.
Miss Jewitt's grade 1 is studying the
signs of autumn and will be making crafts
and paintings of the colourful season.

GRADE 2, ROOM 3
Mrs. Blanchette's grade 2 class is just
completing a theme entitled "Me The One
and Only." They have written diamond
poems about each other, and discussed
sharing and co-operation. For open house
the children made bristol board people to
hold their booklet. The board people sat in
their desks and parents had to try and find
the `me' that looked most like their child.
ROOM 4, GRADE 2 AND 3
The Dinosaur Den, has been studying
dinosaurs since school started. We made a
life size triceratops and, with the help of
Mr. Wilkins, a pteranodona on our ceiling !
Tormorrow we are having a dinosaur day
for the last day of dinosaur studies. The
first "Special Me" was Michaul Alton.
This week Warner Lohse is special me.
Reporters are Caley Moore and Julia
Stecca.
GRADE3, ROOM 10
This grade is off to a good start! We have
27 boys and girls and have read novels and
made booklets already. We're also study-
ing trees and apples and have learned dif-
ferent ways to use crayons from Mrs.
Graham. Reporters Brent Cameron and
Tim Spivak.
GRADE 4, PORTABLE 2
A lot of people like to play nutty neckties.
We are learning about Huron County. We
are rounding off numbers in math, learn-
ing about elephants in the library, and
reading in groups. The books are called
Fourth Grade Nothings, Last was Loyld,
Chocolate Fever, The Fallen Spaceman.
After we are done the books we will be do-
ing skits with them. Reporters: Jenny
Moire and Tammy Uptergrove.
THE ROOM 6 READERS
Mr. Farnell brought in two gerbils nam-
ed Chuck and Charlie. They gnaw on card-
board and paper tubes a lot! Chuck is fat-
ter than Charlie. Nathan feeds the gerbils.
We have been writing motorbike stories
and we are really enjoying them. We are
also writing a book about motorbikes. Soon
we will be making pennants that will tell
something about each of us.
GRADE 5, PORTABLE 1
Mrs. Webster's grade 5 class in portable
1 has been studyingabout food. We tasted
vegetables and made scrumptous pum-
pkin pie. There are beautiful fruit and
vegetable people mobiles hanging in our
class that we created. Our class made
booklets on "How to feed a kid", and "How
to feed a monster". Mrs. Worsell visited us
with baby Charlotte. Mrs. Worsell will be
returning to our class in January.
SPORTS NEWS
MISS CLYNICK
Our soccer tournament is on October 6
(raindate October 7). The junior games
will be at Victoria Public School. The
senior girls are at the agricultural park
and senior boys at G.D. Good luck to all
teams!
Our cross-country meet will be held at
Wawanosh Conservation Area on October
15 (raindate October 16) . Victoria, Robert-
son, Holmesville, Colborne and Brookside
schools will be competing.
Our houseleague system is in full swing.
We are almost finished our soccer
schedule. Volleyball will be our next
activity.
GRADE 6, ROOM 7
Mrs. Tebbut's Grade 6 has been very
busy this month. They are doing a unit on
Simple Machines. They have set up a
pulley in the classroom that makes heavy
objects easy to lift. This unit has proved to
be very interesting to the students.
GRADE 7, ROOM 12
Mrs. Allen's grade 7 class is busily
preparing for the upcoming soccer tourna-
ment. Several students have made • the
cross-country team too. The class has also
been going to Industrial Arts and Family
Studies. They are learning how to sew and
how to work with tools. The history unit
this term is on the Goderich Salt Mine.
They are doing many kinds of interesting
artwork that includes drawing perspective
and tinting with primary colors. Lots of
people won prize money at the Dungannon
and Lucknow Fall Fair. Many students are
raising money by selling White Christmas
Fantasy Ornaments which are very suc-
cessful so far.
GRADE 7, ROOM 8
Mr. Liddle's room 8 students are enjoy-
ing their studies in Industrial Arts and
Family Studies on Tuesday afternoons.
They are learning how to use sewing
machines and wood working equipment.
GRADE 8, ROOM 11
Some of Mr. Hazlitt's grade 8's are get-
ting ready for the soccer tournament. We
have been selling Christmas ornaments to
raise money for the schooL Some people in.

LIBRARY NEWS
Mrs. Blake's library is going to have
plenty of help this year as many students
have signed up for the Library Assistants
Club. The used book sale on "meet the
teacher night" was very successful. Now
she is planning a new book sale, "The
Great Canadian Book Fair", which will be
held on Friday, October 9. The Library will
be open until 4:30 p.m. on that day so that
parents may purchase books.
STU'ENTS' COUNCIL NEWS
The Stuuent Council "White Christmas
Fantasy Sale" is progressing well. All
orders were turned into teachers and class
representatives on .Monday, October 6th.
Deliveries are to be made by the end -of Oc-
tober. Your support is appreciated.
This year our Students' Council consists

In and around Ripley

Secretary Don MacTavish notes this com-
ing Monday Oct 12 is the second one in the
month. So it is time for the Ripley
Agricultural Society meeting in the Ripley
Huron. Central School.
Canvassing for the CNIB
Mrs. Sheila MacDonald reports for her
husband Dan that the Ripley and District
Lions will be canvassing this coming week
for the C.N.I.B.
More fall fair results
Last Friday Mrs. Margery MacDonald,
president of the lady directors of the Ripley
Agricultural Society had two things to
report for the column.
The Agricultural quilt winner was Bridget
Kirkey, St. Clements, Ontario, and the draw
was made at the Ripley fall fair dance on
Saturday evening. Tickets were sold. at the
Ripley Craft Show early last summer and
then at the Ripley Fall fait and in the inter-
val between these two at the Pine River
Cheese Factory.
Also Joy's Amusements from the Toronto
area failed to show and Organizers have not
been able to find out why, or contact the
company even by phone after several
attempts.
Two names in the draw
Two ladies from the Ripley area now have
tickets in the Second Honeymoon lucky
draw drum at C.K.N.X. The ladies are Mary
Scott of the 4th con. and Erma Haldenby of
Holyrood.
Figure skating meeting
Ripley Huron Figure Skating general
meeting will be held in the Ripley Arena at
7:30 p.m. on Wed. Oct. 14, 1987. Everyone
please attend, President Judy Hawrylyshyn
asks you. Dessert and coffee will be served.
Pros will be available for questions.
Bazaar is coming up
On September 28th at 10 a.m. a meeting
was held at the home of Jan Fludder to
finalize the arrangements for St. Andrews
United Church Bazaar and Luncheon to be
held there on Oct. 31st. Things are progress-
ing well and the ladies agreed on the same
time as last year from 11:30 to 2:00 and that
soup will be served again.
Garage sale planned
.Nina Wyld reports that the Ripley Huron
Skating Club is having a garage sale in the
Township Hall, October 17 at 9-12. It will
consist of baking, clothing, household items,
plants, books, etc. All skating mothers can
give their donations on Friday afternoon
Oct. 16.
