The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-10-07, Page 7New Directions conference Chapter Two: New Directions is the title of a one day conference which will take place on Thursday, November 12 in Clin- ton. Sponsored by the Huron County om- munity Services Council, this conference is a follow-up on last year's "Voices for Choices" conference when participants helped to identify needs, gaps and overlaps in services provided to those in the county such as the physically and developmental- ly handicapped, youth, older " adults and those with mental health problems or other special needs. Mrs. Joan Spittal, chairperson of the conference planning committee, has an- nounced that the conference will be held at Huronview because of its easy accessibili- ty and the availability of separate areas for the individual _workshops. Topics for the various workshops will be announced, Spittal says, as soon as the resource people and panelists have been finalized. The registration fee of $15.00 per person will cover attendance at three workshops, lunch and coffee breaks. Persons who have special needs for attendant care, an inter- preter (for the hearing impaired) or fun- ding, in order to attend this conference should contact either Jean Young or Bev Brown at 357-3222 or 1-800-365-3039. The conference is open to the public and will provide an opportunity for care pro- viders, both individual volunteers and agencies, to become better acquainted and find out how they can help each other in their quest to improve the quality of life for residents of Huron County. The Community Services Council is hop- ing that a representative from every municipal council in Huron will attend this conference along with representatives from churches, service clubs, senior citizen clubs, hospitals and Women's In- stitutes. Spittal says that anyone who is working with or interested in youth, seniors, handicapped, mental health, transportation, housing, employment or information services will find something useful at this conference. Chapter Two: New Directions is open to all members of the public. If you would like to receive more information or a brochure, . please call Joan Spittal at 524-8323 or Jean Young at 357-3222. In the event of a mail strike please register by telephone at either of the above numbers. Jr. Farmers The Huron County Junior Farmers are concerned about the safety of farm children. This year as a Community Bet- terment Project they are helping the Farm Safety Association sell signs to caution drivers about children. These signs will be sold at a cost of one dollar (the actual cost to the Junior Farmers) . The signs should be posted along laneways or near areas where children play. Hopefully by warning drivers about children at play, fewer children will be injured by farm machinery, trucks, etc. These signs can be purchased at Junior Farmer club meetings or by contacting any Junior Farmer member.
