It is the time of the year when the con-
versation on the street corner turns to
predictions for the coming winter. Various
methods of forming a prediction are used:
flight paths of migratory birds; the
quickness of leaves to turn color; the con-
dition of old bunions; etc.
By listening to the numerous predictions
that have been made lately, one would ex-
pect a long, cold winter. That seems to be
the general concensus among the 'old
timers' at least. They cite the length of the
recent growing season and the early spr-
ing this year as prime indicators.
If you are only convinced by more scien-
tific methods of prediction; here is the
forecast predicted by the generally ac-
cepted experts in the feild, the Old
Farmers Almanac.
The Almanac says we in the Western
portion of the province can expect milder
than normal temperatures for the late fall
with well -above -normal precipitation and
snowfall in late November and early
December. Pre -Christmas weather will
.see - a major cold wave with attendant
snows. This trend is expected to last into
late December.
It is often said that if the months of Oc-
tober and November are warm and wet,
then January and February are likely to
be cold and snowy. This adage is expected
to hold true this year as the frequent snows
are also being predicted for mid-January
and early February.
Looking way ahead, the Almanac is
predicting a cold spring next year with
below average rainfall.
So no matter who you listen to or believe,
it seems we will be giving the of snow
shovel a good work out over the coming
winter months.

Fear of Alzheimer's
Declining memory and intellect is
sometimes viewed as an inevitable part of
aging, but many people live to be a ripe old
age without experiencing any serious men-
tal impairment. Still, some fear that old
age will bring dependency and the loss of
mental ability. In reality, what these peo-
ple fear is not old age, but the chances of
developing Alzheimer's Disease. -
Alzheimer's Disease is a gradual
wasting away of brain tissue which results
in a decreased intellectual and motor abili-
ty. Although most people who suffer from
Alzheimer's are elderly, the symptoms are
not related to aging, but to the disease -
anyone can develop it. The first sign of the
disease is reported lapses in memory. This
can lead to impaired speech and a loss of
physical co-ordination. Eventually, a
serious deterioration of motor and mental
function becomes 'evident. At this stage
around-the-clock nursing . may 6" become
necessary. Although there can be stable
periods when the individual's condition
seems to improve, Alzheimer's is 'a pro-
gressive disease. Well periods are always
followed by further deterioration.
Diagnosis of the disease is difficult. It
often takes years, before the symptoms

become severe and because it develops
slowly, it may be hard to detect that
