Found balloon at the cottage
Last Saturday morning within one hour
we had two news items right out of the
"Ripley Believe It or Not" class. One we are
pleased to report and the other one - well not
at all pleased, but it is news.
The first one was from Mrs. Adelene Mar-
tyn at her Bruce Beach cottage where she
was with her daughter, Bernice and hus-
band Rod MacLennan of Toronto. On Friday
evening, Sept. 18 everything outside the cot-
tage was normal. On Saturday morning in
the backyard there was an orange coloured
balloon with a blue card attached giving the
details. They were "Balloon Launch Contest
- If you find this card, please return with
finder's name and address. Thank you.
Sender -Aaron Lewis, Age 4, Date: Sept. 18,
1987. Edgeworth Elementary Osage School.
Address: Okemos, Michigan."
Looking up Okemos on a road map of
Michigan, we find that it is five miles east of
Lansing on Highway 16 which goes south-
east into Detroit.
Well it was fortunate for Aaron that his
balloon landed in this back yard where it
did. Mrs. Adelene Martyn is the daughter of
the late George Mooney, one-time owner
and editor' publisher of the weekly Ripley
Express newspaper here. Having worked in
her father's paper she is knowledgeable in
news items. Her daughter, Bernice men-
tions the short time span it took to cover the
distance from mid -state all the way across
Lake Huron. Checking this, Monday, writer
Ab Wylds finds that, the actual find of the
balloon was first made by daughter Bernice
who was a student of his at the `Ripley
District High School.
Aaron Lewis has an interesting name as
Ab looks at it. Aaron, the older brother of
Moses, was the talker for his younger
brother. Then Lewis is a well known name
here - the island of Lewis at the north end of
Scotland, as many people here know, was
the home of 109 families evicted to Canada
in 1851: By 1852 half of them made it to this
area when it was still forested. And also that
we had the Centennial Reunion here in
August 1952 . to commemorate the event.
Also when doing more checking into the
background yesterday afternoon we made a
very interesting discovery on that day when
the sky darkened into night right after noon
in the 1880s and it was only the next morning
that the daylight came back. So it was most
interesting when we realized that we had
found the date and location of the cause.
WILLIAM H. CULBERT
The death occurred at York Central.
Hospital, Richmond Hill of William H.
Culbert on Sept. 1, 1987. He was the son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. E. Culbert and
was born in Huron Township Sept. 1, 1906.
He attended the local schools and retired
from a very successful teaching career in
1968.
He was predeceased by his wife the
former Olive Doughty of Windsor in Nov:
1986, his parents and a brother Walter B.
Culbert in July, 1982.
Left to mourn is one daughter and her hus-
band, Joan and Jim Flett and two grand-
children, Jim and Sheila; and a sister Hazel,
Mrs. Roy Charles of Lucknow.
The funeral was held on Sept. 3rd, 1987 at
the Marshall Funeral Home, Richmond Hill
with interment in Elgin Mills cemetery.
Thanks to Mrs. Annie ( Walter) Culbert for
this obituary.
Looking up the Culberts in the Gwen Har-
rison History of 1985; we see that the home
farm of this Culbert family was on lot 3 on
the 8th concession east in Huron township. It
is the present home of Donald and Lillian
Pollard. l-fenry Culbert Senior and his
parents came from Tipperary, Ireland to
Middlesex County. Later Henry came to lot
3, con. 8. He married Margaret Wall and
they had four sons and two daughters. Their
son, Thomas stayed on lot 3 and married
Sarah Ann Berry, and their family was this
Tom, Walter and Hazel. Tom and Sarah Ann
moved to Ripley in 1937 and lived and owned
the house where Dave Henderson now is, at
the corner of Blake and Queen Streets, just
east of Dave and Grace Murray's place. Lot
4 was the MacLennan farm. It is the one
where Mervyn Culbert -now lives, At the bot-
