Fifty good years
"We met on a blind date and I've been
blind ever since," remembers Hazel
Webster about how she and Charlie met.
"Opps, that's one of our secrets," she adds
with a laugh and a knowing smile.
Charles Webster was born and raised in
Lucknow. At the age of 16, or there abouts,
he travelled to Toronto to work for Eatons.
It was during his ten years in the big city
that he met Hazel, who was living with her
family in near -by Oshawa.
"I remember exactly when we first
met," says Charlie, ignoring the blind date
story. "We courted for six years before she
finally married me. That was September
11, 1937 and it seems like yesterday."
Charles and Hazel were joined in holy
matrimony at a service held at her parents
home in Oshawa. The couple honeymooned
in New York before eventually returning
to Lucknow to open `Webster's", a
restuarant and pool hall on Campbell
Street where the Sears store now stands.
"We spent six years running that
restuarant," says Hazel, "and, you know, I
couldn't even cook."
Charlie and Hazel lived above the shop
but eventually gave it up to run a dairy in
Stowville for three years before returning
to Lucknow for good. The fact that Hazel's
first cousin is Mrs. Donald McKinnon may
have helped influence the return to the
village.
"We ran a ladies' and gent's clothing
store for a while," says Hazel, "That's
what Charlie really wanted to d."
Charlie also remembers spending ten
years refereeing minor hockey during
those days and soon opened the hardware
store that still stands today on the
Village's main street.
The Webster's life was enriched with the
arrival of their daughter Judith. She has
since married a local boy, Wayne Brooks,
and moved to Cambridge -Preston where
they gave the Websters two grandchildren
, Shelley and Craig.
In the year 1958, the Websters bought a
piece of land on Ross Street and built a
home which they still occupy. The parcel
of land once housed a church,' a piece of
local history Charlie is quite proud of, and
rightly so.
"These have been fifty very good
years," says Charlie. "I wouldn't change a
thing."
The Websters celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary with a dance in
Lucknow last Friday evening. Friends and
realatives travelled from far and wide to
attend and wish the couple fifty more hap-
py years together. Congratulations
Charles and Hazel Webster.
Back in Ontario
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Black and daughter,
Meagan, of Edmonton have recently arriv-
ed in Ontario and are planning to make
their home here. They are presently stay-
ing with Bill's mother, Mrs. Walter Black,
in Lucknow. Bill was raised on the Fourth
Concession in Huron and his wife Judy is
formerly of London. Good to have you both
back in Ontario.
A community shower was held last
Thursday evening in the United Church in
Ripley for Shannon Blackwell, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Blackwell. Mrs. Wes
Smith chaired the affair. Readings and
contests were given by several people
after which, the bride-to-be opened her
gifts. A lovely lunch followed.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to
Mr. and Mrs. Chris Hartemink on the sud-
den passing of Mrs. Hartemink's father,
Mr. Jake Timmerman of Owen Sound.
Unit Five of the Ripley U.C.W. held their
September meeting at the home of Mrs.
Maryanne MacDonald of Brookside. The
guest speaker for the day was Mrs.
McFarlane of the Lucknow United Church
who spoke on prejudice and
discrimination.

surance issue. Now it's time to make a choice.
Drivers say huge rate increases are highway robbery. The
insurance companies have niaade record profits, hut are still
pleading poverty.
t -amities are being robbed through skyrocketing premiums. The hig insurers -
say the system can't he changed.
On Thursday, September 10th, you have a choice to make:
WHO CAN YOU TRUST TO REALLY STAND .UP AND FIGHT FOR
YOU AND YOUR FAMILY''
WHICH PARTY HAS THE COURAGE TO FIGHT.THE POWERFUL IN-
SURANCE COMPANIES ON YOUR BEHALF:'
David Peterson has protected the insurance companies from a new driver -
owned insurance plan. He'd guarantee their profits for them through
legislation.
On Thursday, September 10th. it'll be up to you.
You can let the highway robbery continue. Or, you can use your vote to sup-
port Bob Rae and the New Democrats, who are fighting for you and your
family.
Use your vote to send a message to the big insurance companies that the
highway robbery must stop now.
