It's seedin
This time of year is traditionally called
"harvest" in Ontario, but it's the perfect
time to seed that new lawn you've been
wanting. Nancy Cain, extension . coor-
dinator of the University of Guelph's
department of horticultural science says
mid-August to mid-September seeding
avoids most of the hot, dry summer
weather and gives your new lawn a chance
to become established before winter
arrives.
Although estimated at only hall the cost
of sodding a lawn, seeding can become ex-
pensive if you have to do it a second or
third time. Start now and maintain a moist
seedbed until after germination, says
Cain.
If you're preparing to sow grass seedy
around a new house, check the soil first,
time in Ontario
says lain. It's difficult to improve poor
soil conditions after the lawn is establish-
ed. A minimum depth of 15 cm of good top-
soil is required and a soil test can indicate
nutrient needs such as phosphorus, she
says.
Slope the grade to fall gently away from
the house and avoid depressions that will
hold water. Prepare the seedbed by
removing stones, bricks and other debris
and broadcast enough commercial fer-
tilizer to provide nitrogen at a rate of 1 kg
per 100 square metres. Work the fertilizer
into the surface 3 cm by raking with a steel
lawn rake, says Cain. A lawn roller can be
used to firm the seedbed, if necessary.
Cain recommends a mixture of grass
seeds; Kentucky Bluegrass is resilient to
traffic and grows well in full sun, while
creeping Red Fescue can be added to fill in
under trees and areas with poorer soil.
Turf -type perennial rye grass is a good
companion since it germinates quickly and
does well in compacted areas. The com-
bination will ensure a good lawn even
under varying conditions, says Cain.
That's flexibility you might not get if you
opted for sodding an "instant lawn",she
says.
Seed at the rate of 1.5 to 2.5 kg per 100
square metres and cover the seed lightly
with a fan rake. Even later summer
seeding will have to be wateredfor up to
two weeks, says Cain, to ensure good ger-
mination and allow the grass to establish
roots. Finish your lawn treatment with a
late October or early November applica-
tion of a high -nitrogen fertilizer .
