"I handle stress pretty well, but when it comes to giving someone something that could cause cancer, I can't handle that," she added. Some measure of relief was gained when a Mississauga testing laboratory found the water at the cottage to be free of PCBs. However, the pump still had to go. The Ministry of the Environment sent a representative around to collect samples for their own use, but the results of the . ministry tests are not in yet. At the same time, the ministry representative dropped off a pair of rubber gloves and a plastic bag to use when the Heaths removed their old pump. When the pump was removed, it was discovered to be on the verge of breaking a seal which would have allowed the PCBs to flow into the Heath's well, possibly con- taminating other wells and water systems in the area. Now, the pump sits in a plastic bag on the Heath's lawn. "The ministry said they had no plans as of today for disposing of the pumps," said Heath. "What am I supposed to do with it in the meantime?' she said. noting that her family will be leaving the cottage soon. Heath hopes others will take the time to check out their pumps for possible con- tamination, though she admits, "not everyone has $1,000 to replace a pump." Actually, the total cost to Heath has been far in excess of $1,000, including the phone calls around the country and to the United States, trips to Mississauga and the cost of having their water tested privately. Ironically, Heath's new pump will also be a'F.E. Meyers model, albeit one without PCBs in the motor. "I really feel we have the best pump," she said. Now, as she waits for the Ministry of the Environment to call with their results, or to pick up their old pump, Heath has a new outlook on the. sort of environmental pro- blems she admits she paid little attention to before her own trouble this summer. "I really beleive we can either have PCBs or people," she stated. If you have any questions concerning the use of PCBs in well pumps, contact the. The local team will compete with other teams in the Grey -Bruce region. Ringette is a new sport for the Village of Lucknow. Hilda Andrew and Tracey McDonagh, the two ladies responsible for getting the team together, felt there was a need for a sport in the area that young girls could participate in and decided on ringette because of its success in other communities. The Lucknow team will play teams from Ripley, Teeswater, Walkerton, Hanover, Tiverton and Belgrave with at least one practice and one game per week. The game is played on a regulation ice surface and is similar to hokcey except that in- stead of a puck, players use sticks to pro- pel a soft ring into the net. It is very important that interested players be able to skate as well as have complete protective hockey equipment. Registration is being held on Tuesday, September 8 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at the Lucknow Town Hall. All registrations will be accepted and after a few practices, the coaches hope to trim' the team to 17 members. If you would like any further information on the sport of ringette or the local team, feel free to contact Hilda Andrew at 528-3725 or Tracey McDonagh at 528-3821.
