Landowners in the township are urged to take this opportunity to review the areas where the dumping •of fill will be regulated and to discuss the policies governing the placement of fill in these areas with Con- servation Authority staff. The Open House will be held in the Township Hall from 1- 5 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. The purpose of the proposed regulations is to control the dumping of fill in areas where it may cause flooding, erosion or pollute rivers. These regulations are in- tended to help protect the rights of upstream and downstream landowners who could be affected by these problems. The regulations are not intended to pro- hibit all filling but rather to control the type and quantity to fill being placed in order to avoid flooding, erosion and pollu- tion. In some instances the dumping of fill would have to be accompanied by ap- propriate erosion control measures. The fill regulations will be applied to all those lands that are located within the river valley of the Maitland River, its tributaries and headwater areas. General- ly the types of lands that are affected in- clude flood plains, wetlands, steep valley slopes and the banks of streams. If you have any questions regarding the proposed regulations or the Open House, please contact the Maitland Valley Conser- vation Authority at 335-3557. Lice don't take summer vacations Is Your Child At Risk? As our children are enjoying summer vacation, they are probably involved with seasonal group activities such as summer camp, baseball, swimming lessons, play groups, etc. They may be at risk for ex- posure to head lice. Bruce County Health Unit would like to remind parents of the need for constant vigilance since head lice do not take a vacation. Head lice are tiny insects about 1/8" long, which like to live in hair - clean or dirty. Anyone can get them, but children are more likely to have head lice than adults because of their close physical con- tact with one another. Head lice multiply quickly and spread from head to head by crawling directly or via hats, scarves, hair brushes, or bedding and towels. Don't be alarmed as head lice are not a serious health hazard. The most obvious sign of having lice is persistent itching and scratching ( since the live lice tend to match the colour of the scalp, move quickly and are difficult to see ). The best way td deal with the situa- tion is to detect it before it becomes a pro- blem. Therefore, check your children's hair and scalp regularly for lice and their nits. Nits . are the whitish eggs and, although they are much smaller, they. are easier to detect than lice. They look like dandruff that won't brush or blow away. They are usually found very close to the scalp (1/4 - 1/2" along the hair shaft) and are .firmly attached to the hair shaft - especially near the nape of the neck and behind the ears. If you find head lice or nits, ask your local pharmacist for a pediculosis sham- poo. Follow the instructions carefully. There are different kinds of shampoo on the market and each has a particular method of action; therefore, it is im- perative that the directions be closely followed. Often a follow-up treatment in' 7 days is recommended. Use a fine-tooth comb, preferably metal, to remove the re- maining nits. All personal items and, clothing should be dealt with as lice can crawl off the head and live up to 55 hours without food before infecting the same or another head. Clothing, bedding and towels should be washed in very hot water and/or dried in the hot cycle. of the dryer. Clothing and bedding that cannot be washed should be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for 10 days to two week:. Brushes and combs should be cleaned and then disinfected by soaking in a pediculosis shampoo for one hour, or in very hot water ( over 65°C) for 10 minutes. Carpets and upholstery can be vacuumed and the vacuome- bag im- mediately discarded in a sealed plastic garbage bag. . If you find lice or nits on your child, check all other family members and treat them accordingly. Inform the parents of playmates and the school so that the parents of contact children .can be on the alert. It is especially important after each school vacation for parents to check their children's heads weekly, but it is also a good idea to designate a time each week to check through your child's hair throughout the year.
