Beautiful babies and heavy horses help
The 128th Annual Dungannon Fair was
celebrated last weekend and while atten-
dance for the event appeared to be slightly
lower than previous years, due partly to
the humid weather, all those who did at-
tend certainly got their money's worth.
A total fo 23 children participated in the
Pet Parade held on Friday evening. The
winner's circle was busy as prizes were
given to the following: Largest dog - Tim
McNee, Smallest dog - Tammy Pengelly,
Best costumed dog - Jana Harman,
Largest cat - Graham Townsend, Best
costumed kitten - Amy Glenn, Best solid
colored rabbit - Brenda Nivins, Best spot-
ted rabbit - Barb Nivins, Best poultry -
Matt Drennan, Best pet bird - Wes Dren-
nan, Most unusual pet - Julia Stecca and
her rat, Longest ears on a pet - Brenda
Nivins' rabbitt was tied with Ji
Weaver's dog, Pet with the longest
whiskers - Cherianne D'Aoust's cat tied
with Amy Glenn's cat, Pet with the
smoothest covering - Tammy Pengelly,
Pet with the biggest feet - Tim McNee's
dog, Pet with the longest tail - Trevor
Cook's dog, Pet with the shortest tail -
Mike Culbert's turtle, Most colorful pet -
Tracy Cook's dog, Best, costumed pet -
Barb Nivin's rabbitt, Best trained pet -
Trevor Cook's dog.
The weather severly affected the
number of contestants in the chainsawing
competition but the games went ahead
with the overall winner proving to be Brian
Argyl. In the log sawing, Willard Calhoun
and Jim Sloan won the men's class while
their wives, Judy Sloan and Helen Calhoun
claimed first in the ladies' competition,
The balethrowing had to be cancelled
due to therain butthe armwrestling was
moved to the barn where competition was
nothing short of fierce. Winners in the
men's class, under 120 lbs - John Wright,
121 to 150 lbs - Jack Miller, 151 to 180 lbs -
Elwyn Brindley, 181 and over - Wes
McLean, open class - Wes McLean. On the
ladies' side of the event in the 100 to 120 lbs
class - Jean McWhinney, 121 to 150 lbs -
Nancy Rivett, 151 and over - Laura Hare,
open class - Dawn Tucker.
Bessie Bingo, alk scheduled for Friday
evening had to be postponed until next
weekend.
The annual parade left the United
Church corner at noon on Saturday. A float
by Bonnie and Clair Hodges and family
depicting Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs won the prize for the most original
'display.
Other prizes in the parade included Jack
Chisholm first in the miscellaneous class,
Jane Smyth as the best costumed pre-
schooler, Adam Smyth had the best
decorated vehicle, Angela Brindley was
the best costumed elementary school child
while Jeff Brindley had the best decorated
vehicle in his class. The best vintage vehi-
cle was owned by Harold McGee. Diane
Drennan won for best pony while her son,
Wesley, placed second in that class.
Folowing the parade, the 1987 Fair
Queen, Marcia Soak, officially opened the
fair after being introduced by Agricultural
Society President Carol Nivins. Other
dignitaries on hand for the day were
Warden Brian McBurney, M.P. Murray
Cardiff, M.P.P. Jack Riddel, Ashfield
Councillor Paul Black, West Wawanosh
Reeve Cecil Cranston and Colbourne
Reeve Russel Kernighan.
There was an excellent turn out for the
Horseshoe pitching competition with first
spot going to Harold Carter and Al
Johnston, second to Alex and Crystal Boa
and third t� Sid Lawson and Mary Rivett.
The baby show consited of three classes
for each of three age groups. The best baby
under four months went to Cassandra Ulch
of Lucknow. In the four to eight month
class, Scott Blake, also of Lucknow placed
first. In the eight to 12 month gi•oup, Tif-
fany Ross of Goderich took top honors. All
the babies received a gift from Gerbers.
Jeff Brindley won the children's bike
race for kids aged eight to 12. In the 13 and
over group it was Dennis Park taking first.
This year, six competitors took part in
the half mile run in which Dennis Park was
the first to finish.
The best watermelon seed spitter of the
day under the age of five was William
Drennan who shot the seed two feet.
Melissa Nicholson won for the 12 and under
age group by propelling her seed 10 feet.

top the ladies' class at 19 feet, six inches
but the best overall spit- was from Jeff
Ireland who scored with 27 feet.
The scarecrow contest was won by Barb
Nivins. Jim Errington won the all new
Handyman Contest which was sponsored
by Derk and Linie Logtenberg.
The junior champion in Saddle Horses
was Holly Robinson from RR2 Kincardine
while Jayne Walker was the Senior
Champ. Jayne lives at RR2 Holland
Centre.
Don Sowerby of RR4 Goderich was the
overall champ in the Heavy Horse
Competition.
Mathew Sproul took the most points in
the Field Crop section.
The Homecraft Section of the fair had
many beautiful items on display. Linda
Young received the most points in sewing
while Marjorie Hartleib of Belgrave had
top spot in knitting and crocheting. Peg
Purdon received recognition for one of her
quilts being grand champion as well as
having a quilt chosen reserve champ.
Anna Dolmage received top honors in
the Creative Crafts while Jeannette
McNeil won in the Christmas Corner and
Photography.
Tony and Derlyne Bokkers won the
Ceramics section of the show.
One section of the baking class was won
