Slowpitch into playoffs
The Lucknow-Dungannon Mens
Slowpitch League finished out its regular
season of play last ' week. The 14 team
league is divided, into two divisions with
the top seven teams forming the A
Division.
Congratulations to the Lanesville Lords
who completed a perfect season with a 13-0
record to finish on top of the A Division.
Nile was second in that division with a
record of 12-1. Their only loss came at the
hands of the Lords when the game was
decided by a single run.
The top team in each division receives a
bye during the first round of the playoffs
which began on Monday. All playoff series
are based on a three -out -of -five format
with games being played on diamonds in
Lucknow, Dungannon and Benmiller.
The league sponsored a 50-50 draw this
season with half of the total proceeds being
donated to improvements at the Dungan-
non Ball Diamond. Elizabeth Black • of
Lucknow-was the lucky winner of the draw
made at the league's executive meeting on
August 13. Her share of the money
amounted to $830. The league would like to
take this opportunity to, congratulate Liz
on her winfall and to thank all others Who
helped with this fund raising event. Also,
here's a good luck with to those teams in-
volved in post -season play.'
Teddy bears at the Falls
"If you go down to " the Falls today,
you're in for a big surprise". All kinds of
teddy bears are having a picnic and you,
your ..family and, of course, your teddy
bears are invited too.
This year's Teddy Bear Picnic will be
held on. Sunday, August 23 at the Falls
Reserve -Conservation Area at Benmiller.
Thin. is • a rescheduled date after raih
cancelled the original date planned. There
will be free day admission to the Falls for
this event.
Registration of bears will take place
from 12:30 until 1:00 p.m. with all the fun
beginning at 1:00 sharp. Judging will in-
clude9priZes for the best dressed teddy, the
oldest teddy and the most original teddy
bear's name. The prizes for the event have
been donated by Goderich and area mer-
chants who are to be thanked for their
support.
Activities such as sack races, obstacle
races and guessing games will provide fun
for the whole family all afternoon long.
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority is sponsoring this second annual
event and organizer DebPerkins says it'll
be a great day for bears' -and people alike.
"We found last year that people really
enjoyed themselves and were looking for-
ward. to the next picnic," says Deb from
her office in Wroxeter. "This year we have
included some special games for the adults
as well. Things like a teddy bear trivia quiz
which we hope won't be too difficult for
most people. It'll be a great day even if you
don't own a teddy."
Deb adds to be sure to bring along a pic-
nic supper to end an exciting and
`bearable' day.
