Mike Snobelen, a Huron Township
farmer and businessman, will carry the
Progressive Conservative colours in the
upcoming provincial election. Snobelen,
who also ran in the 1985 campaign, is a
past chairman of the Bruce County Board
of Education and a former Huron
Township Reeve.
In an interview with the Sentinel last
week, Snobelen said his main concern in
this election is the escalating cost of
government. He cited the 30 per cent
budget increase in the last two years which
he feels cannot be justified, along with the
5,000 new civil servant jobs created in
Toronto alone as examples of over
spending.
Snobelen's other main concerns in this
election campaign centre on hydro cur-
rently being purchased from Manitoba and
Quebec which, obviously, does hot create
jobs in Ontario and Premier Peterson's re-
cent announcement regarding the increase
of some $297 million on teachers, books
and computers.
The PC candidate pointed out that Bruce
County would require a 22 per cent in-
crease in education taxes to cover the cost
of buildings and facilities proposed by the
announcement. Approximately 20 new
classromms would be required in Bruce
County under the proposed increase.
Snobelen advised the Sentinel that Bruce
County currently enjoys a pupil -teacher
ratio of 24 to 1 and predicts that by 1990 the
education of children in this county will be
done with portable buildings if- the trend
continues.
On the agricultural scene, Snobelen says
he feels subsidies to farmers should be
continued on the basis that the farmer be
required to set aside a portion of his land.
This in turn would ensure a higher quality
of land available for future generations.
On a persoanl note, Mr. Snobelen is mar-
ried with a family of three. Should the
September 10 election see Snobelen suc-
cessful in his bid, he points out that with
two capable managers in his business
along with his supportive wife, they will
adapt very well to any major changes in
lifestyle.
Progressive Conservative candidate Mike Snobelen has thrown his hat into the ring
for the riding of Bruce County. Snobelen, seen here greeting voters in Lucknow, also
ran in the 1985 campaign.
