Michealknows his whale
`Knowledge', according to Webster's
Dictionary, is defined as direct perception,
understanding, practical skill, information
and learning. Eight-year-old Micheal
Paddy's knowledge about a certain subject
has increased immensely over . the past
few weeks as he prepared a special project
now on display at the Lucknow Library.
Micheal, a grade four student at
Brookside Public School, is quite able and
eager to sit down and discuss with anyone
his acquired knowledge of the Humpback
Whale.
His interest in the Humpback peaked
after reading "Whalesong", a novel by
Robert Siegel about' what a whale thinks
and feels while being hunted. The story is
told by the whale and it was this which
caused young Micheal to search further
for more information about this emperor
of the ocean.
Making use of the books available at the
Lucknow Library and the Brookside
School Library, Micheal put many hours of
research into his subject. This research
allowed him to set up a special display on
the Humpback Whale at the library which
is open to the public for viewing.
In addition to being an avid reader and
researcher at such an early age, Micheal
is also an accomplished artisan. Combin-
ing his knowledge of whales with his talent
for glss etching, Micheal has designed and
produced a sun cather depicting the
Humpback.
This is not Micheal's first glass etching.
During his talk with the Sentinal, he spoke
of the many other etchings he has com-
pleted particularly one of a.hot air balloon
which is his favorite.
If you have a minute for relaxation in
your busy schedule this week, take the
time to drop into the LucknowLibrary and
browse through Micheal's display on the
Humpback Whale. It is extremely in-
teresting and reflects the many hours of
work that where put into it.
The local library is open, for your enjoy-
ment, from 1 through 5 p.m. Monday and
Wednesday; 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday and
Thursday; 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Fridays and
from 10 in the morning until 2 in the after-
noon on Saturdays. Stop in today...you are
sure to find something you like.
