TO OUR
EPOY TOWN
,Or
No, the word `Sepoy' isn't Scottish for beautiful but it does have some Scottish in-
fluence. This week, in part two of our special report on the history of the Lucknow
signs, we'll find out once and for all what a `Sepoy Town' really is.
To our what?!
By Rob Bundy
Last week on these pages we delved into
the history, and eventually the meaning, of
the phrase `Drive Canny' which appears
on the Welcome to Lucknow signs posted
at the four main arteries of the Village. To-
day we'll look at the other side of the story
and the sign. The part that identifies this
as a `Sepoy Town'.
With the help of some of the older
residents of the Village and through old
newspaper clippings supplied by the Town
Office, we have been able to determine
what, in fact, a Sepoy is and why Lucknow
is a `Sepoy Town'.
Three-quarters of the early settlers in
this area were Scottish and in the year. 1857
two Scottish Regiments, the Argylls and
the Sutherlands, participated in the quell-
ing of the Indian Mutiny, a barbaric upris-
ing of native rebels in India.
The main battle of. the short-lived war
occurred in the city of Lucknow, India and
it was this name the Scots who had settled
in the Queen's Bush in Huron and Bruce
Counties used for their community.
The word `Sepoy' comes from the name
given to the Indian foot soldiers who fought
alongsidethe regiment in the battle later
known as the Relief of Lucknow. If not for
the' Sepoys, there may not have been a
Lucknow, India or, for that matter, a
Lucknow, Ontario. Hence we are a Sepoy
Town.
Lucknow's main street is named after
Sir Colin Campbell who led the relief force
in the battle of Lucknow so many
thousands of miles away from the roadway
that bears his name.
But this is only one claim. Others believe
that the street was named after Malcolm
Campbell, the village's first merchant.
However, all records and early history
leads to the first assumption. Certainly
other streets such as . Havelock, Outram,
Willoughby and Canning are named after
British generals of that Indian Mutiny era.
The name Stauffer Street, leading into
the Village from the north, may very well
be named after Eli Stauffer who blazed the
first white man's trail into the area over
150 years ago.
The first 'You are .. in Lucknow' signs
were erected to correspond with the first
paving of the main street while the most
recent signs are an improved versionof
the originals erected at a cost of some
$1,200 for all four by the Village Council.
So no matter how you drive or what you
call the Village, it is certain that this,com.-
munity has a long and colorful history. One
that is remembered each and every time
you pass by our 'You are in Lucknow'
signs.
